Dua Helang

(Malays please don't be offended, its only a joke) Orang Asli Chief "Dua Helang" was asked by a Malaysian government official, 'You have observed the Malay for 90 years. You've seen Malay wars and their technological advances. You've seen Malay progress, and the damage Malay have done.' The Chief nodded in agreement. The official continued, 'Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the Malays go wrong?' The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and then calmly replied. 'When Malays came, Orang Asli running it, no taxes, no debt, plenty of kerbau, plenty of animals, clean water. Women did all the work, Medicine man free. Orang Asli spend all day hunting and fishing; all night having sex. Then the chief leaned back and smiled. 'Only Malays dumb enough to think he could improve system like that.'

Boost for Iskandar

Boost for Iskandar Posted on February 27, 2013 - Property News. By ZAZALI MUSA JOHOR BARU: Iskandar Malaysia will benefit immensely with the implementation of the rapid transit system (RTS) and high speed rail (HSR) linking Malaysia and Singapore. Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) chief executive officer Datuk Ismail Ibrahim said the systems would create good prospects and strong economic growth for the region. He said strong economic growth would in return generate employment for local population especially for knowledge and skilled workers. “We at Irda will give our utmost cooperation to both the Malaysia and Singapore Governments in implementing the two projects,” said Ismail. He said this in a press conference after hosting the annual luncheon for the bureau chiefs and the representatives of the media organisations based in Johor Baru recently. Last week, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his Singapore counterpart Lee Hsien Loong jointly announced their agreement to develop the RTS and the HSR. The RTS will link Johor Baru and Singapore to improve accessibility and connectivity between the two points and will be up and running by 2018. The HSR on the other hand will cut travel times from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore in just 90 minutes from five hours of driving and seven hours by rail, and expected to be completed by 2020. “A comprehensive integrated transportation system is needed within Iskandar to incorporate and support the RTS and the HSR,” said Ismail. He said there would be three options for the RTS project for the trains to run above ground (grate) or via undersea tunnel. Ismail said the final outcome on what kind of link would be built would all depend on the recommendations of the study of the two governments involved as well as costing. The terminating stations of the link will be in at former site of the Tanjung Puteri Lorry Custom Complex here and in the vicinity of Republic Polytechnic in Singapore. The RTS will have co-located CIQ facility in Singapore and here so that commuters need to clear immigration only once for each way of travel. Johor Baru and Woodlands in Singapore is linked by the 1.056km Johor Causeway completed in 1932, and between 80,000 and 100,000 vehicles use it daily. Johor and the republic are also connected via the Second Link, a dual three-lane carriageway linking Tanjung Kupang to Tuas in Singapore, the bridge is about 1.9km long. http://www.starproperty.my/index.php/property-news/boost-for-iskandar/

Locals drive 'Life of Pi' to Oscar victory

Locals drive 'Life of Pi' to Oscar victory By TASHNY SUKUMARAN On song: Rhythm & Hues employees celebrating at their Cyberjaya office after ‘Life of Pi’ scooped four Oscars during the live telecast yesterday. PETALING JAYA: A group of Malay-sians can bask in Oscar glory with the movie Life of Pi clinching the golden statuette for best visual effects. The team at Rhythm & Hues KL that worked primarily on the ocean and the tiger Richard Parker in the movie directed by Ang Lee cheered, screamed and cried when they discovered their work had helped win an Academy Award. “We were watching the live telecast,” said KL branch senior manager Hasnul Hadi Samsudin. “When they announced Life Of Pi as the winner for visual effects, we were ecstatic.” The award was presented during the ceremony to Guillaume Roche-ron, Bill Westenhofer, Erik-Jan De Boer and Donald R. Elliott. But being part of the Academy Award-winning blockbuster could prove to be more than a well-deserved honour for Rhythm & Hues the win could also result in a slew of investors looking to buy over the studio and save them from folding. Hasnul was confident the win would help attract investors and that good news concerning the company's future would be announced “sooner rather than later”. But Hasnul considers his team winners no matter what happens. “We've come out of this winners, we are already winners,” he said, adding that while he had always felt the studio's work on Life Of Pi was award-worthy, he had never thought it would scoop not one, but four Academy Awards. According to Hasnul, preparing a few seconds of footage had taken weeks of work. As the film was shot in a water tank, the team had to remove the background and the divers so they could be replaced with computer-generated seas and skies. Emmalynn Yam, 23, who did rotoscopy and prep work for the film, could hardly believe the “surreal” turn of events. “I consider myself extremely lucky because I never once expected to be involved in a film of such calibre. “During the long hours, I used to joke that if it fell short of an Oscar, I'd flip tables in the studio. Needless to say, there won't be tables flipping anytime soon!” http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2013/2/26/nation/12758799&sec=nation

How the scam works: In the last few months, a well-designed travel brochure has been hitting millions of homes, especially in Australia. The publication contains lottery scratch tickets offering complimentary lottery prizes to celebrate a new investment opportunity. The scratch tickets reveal a prize of $130,000. Since the winning is published in a nice and glossy magazine, several people really believe they hit the jackpot! The winners are informed there is a $7,000 government tax to pay before the proceeds can be released and the travel company will pay half. Anwar calls for ‘spirit of change’ in CNY address

Anwar calls for ‘spirit of change’ in CNY address By Zurairi AR February 09, 2013 KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today blared Pakatan Rakyat's (PR) clarion call for change to the Chinese community as they prepare to usher in the Lunar New Year, saying it would be a step towards improving a country that has been ruled for over half a century by Barisan Nasional (BN). The Opposition Leader, in his Chinese New Year message on TV Selangor's YouTube channel, noted the importance of racial and religious unity among Malaysians when embracing the "spirit of change" to help the opposition pact achieve its Putrajaya goal. "We bring a spirit of change, for a better state of affairs," said Anwar, who could be seen sitting beside a small round table topped with greeting cards, Mandarin oranges and a lantern hanging from the ceiling. "Hopefully we can defend this spirit of change by attaining progress and good victory in the next general elections." The Permatang Pauh MP also insisted that the change promised by the opposition is a "change for the good". Anwar's message comes following claims by PR's political foes, particularly his long time arch-nemesis, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, that a vote for change would lead Malaysia to destruction. Dr Mahathir, who is said to still wield influence in ruling Umno, had last week warned Malaysians against voting for change, arguing that it will result in a weak government that would hinder economic progress. In the video, Anwar also urged Malaysians to band together in defending peace and unity between Malaysians of different races and religions, in order to bring about change. He likened the people's struggle for political change over the past year to the journey of Chinese Buddhist monk Xuanzang in the famous folktale "Journey to the West". According to him, Xuanzang was faced with many hardships along his journey, but managed to triumph at the end of it. "(We've had) years of anguish, with economic problems, graft, corruption, insults to races and religions, rights of citizens, (where) citizenships are still questioned and disputed," he added. Anwar's speech in the video was interspersed with montages of various multicultural festival celebrations organised by PR. This year's Chinese New Year celebrations has seen politicians from both Barisan Nasional (BN) and federal opposition Pakatan Rakyat (PR) eagerly taking the chance to reach out to voters, by sending out greetings with a subtle political flavour ahead of Election 2013. The Chinese, who are the second-largest ethnic group in the country, had previously been described by Dr Mahathir as the "kingmakers" in the 13th general election, which must be held within months. http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/anwar-calls-for-spirit-of-change-in-cny-address/

Over 1,700 Malaysians abroad register for postal voting
February 09, 2013 KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 — A total of 1,779 applications for postal voting have been received from Malaysians abroad so far since online registration was launched on December 21 last year. Election Commission deputy chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said the highest number of applications came from Australia with 406, followed by the United Kingdom (323), the United States (131), China (104) and Qatar (91). “The EC’s decision to allow all Malaysians abroad to register online and through e-mail has proven to be effective as many took the opportunity to do so. “We estimate about 100 Malaysians abroad will register with the EC each day and we hope this trend will continue and increase daily,” he said on Bernama TV’s Helo Malaysia show here tonight. He said among the requirements for Malaysians to vote overseas were that they must already be a registered voter and have returned to Malaysia within 30 days in a five-year period before Parliament is dissolved. Wan Ahmad said Malaysians overseas who have registered as a voter and would like to use postal voting can download the application form (Borang 1B) through the EC website, http://www.spr.gov.my. — Bernama http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/over-1700-malaysians-abroad-register-for-postal-voting
