Bought By Belian! Baram’s Betrayal By BN MP

Bought By Belian! Baram’s Betrayal By BN MP – MAJOR EXCLUSIVE

Local man who has swapped loyalty for wealth
The people of Baram have been sold down their own river by their native MP, the Federal Deputy Trade & Industry Minister Jacob Sagan!
Sarawak Report has received exclusive information, indicating that the local man’s support for Taib’s plans to flood his own area has been bought by two large timber concessions, allowing him to log Belian wood!
The shocking betrayal explains why Sagan, who is himself a Kenyah, born in Long Anap on the banks of the Baram River, is refusing to prevent Taib’s plans to build yet another dam in the region.
The proposed Baram Dam would flood about 400 square kilometres of forest lands and displace around 20,000 indigenous people from Sagan’s own community, including his home village of Long Anap. Altogether, 26 Kenyah, Kayan and Penan villages will be drowned under water.
Secret Belian concessions for Taib cronies!
Precious hardwood forest. Belian Timber licences are only handed out to 'special people'!
Local people have been at a loss to understand Sagan’s support for the project, which would destroy one of Borneo’s most precious remaining rainforest regions and the livelihoods of its people.
There is no further need for electricity in Sarawak, so the dam has been condemned as unnecessary.
However, secret Forestry Department Maps have now been made available to Sarawak Report, which give one very persuasive reason.
The maps show that Sagan has been handed two hugely valuable Belian timber concessions right within his own region!
Forestry map key that shows that striped red stands for Belian Timber Concession
Standard timber concessions rarely include Belian, which is an endangered species and extremely valuable.
Under normal licences the loggers are supposed to leave such special conservation species standing and it is subject to a total export ban.
However, rumours have persisted that special concessions for Belian timber have been given out to Taib’s political cronies to buy their support.
Our maps show that there is indeed a network of these Belian concessions in the Baram area, which still has stretches of virgin forest and it names the companies and the licence numbers.
Winjac Sdn Bhd and Milisha Holdings Sdn Bhd
Two of these concessions are placed right in the middle of Jacob Sagan’s own Baram constituency area and cover an impressive area amounting to some 15 square kilometres. The companies owning the concessions are named Winjac Sdn Bhd and Milisha Holdings Sdn Bh.
Winjac Sdn Bhd & Miilisha Holdings Sdn Bhd - Belian concessions in Baram
Wider maps show that these two concessions are situated right in the middle of the Baram region, near the Indonesian border and not far from Jacob Sagan’s birthplace of Long Anap.
While, Sagan has travelled far and enjoyed a good life, thanks to becoming an ultra-loyal supporter of Taib, most of his relatives still live in this area.
Regional map showing the timber concessions belonging to Winjac & Milisha Sdn Bhd
The value of these concessions run into millions of ringgit, according to experts in the business. Belian is an endangered species and takes hundreds of years to grow into the mature ‘iron wood’ , for which it is famous.
Belian leaf - surely the wealth of the forests should be conserved and shared?
The wood can sell at up to RM6,000 a ton, which is a sign of its growing scarcity, caused by the greed of the timber companies who have invaded Sarawak’s forests.
So, who is getting these favoured concessions worth such wealth and what are they paying for them?
Indeed, under normal uncorrupted practices Belian would be banned from being logged altogether, just as it is supposedly banned from being exported.
Also, under normal uncorrupted practices, any licence that was given out would be tendered, so that the licence would go to the highest bidder and the money for the licence could then be used by the government to improve the lives of local people.
Timber licence money would be one way to pay for schools, roads, electricity, water pumps and better health care and allowances. However, the people of Baram remain poor and with few such services.
So, who has these concessions and what did they pay?
Milisha Holdings Sdn Bhd is jointly owned by Jacob Sagan himself and his wife, Winnie Jolly!
It turns out the shareholders of the company Milisha Holdings Sdn Bhd are none other than local MP and Government Minister, Jacob Sagan and his wife Winnie Jolly!
Did Jacob Sagan tell his voters?
This demands an explanation from Taib Mahmud and Jacob Sagan, preferably to the forces of law and order. Because, to secretly hand an MP of your own political party a large and valuable timber concession is a scandalous conflict of interest.
People in public office should not get involved in any form of business involving state concessions, for obvious reasons, and any business interests should be openly declared.
But, there is no evidence that Sagan has publicly declared this timber licence BT/9107, granted to his company Milisha Holdings. Nor is there any evidence that he has declared licence BT/1962, which he also holds through his wife and daughter’s ownership of Winjac Sdn Bhd.
Sagan's wife and daughter own this other timber company with Belian concessions in the Baram region
Perhaps we will learn how many of Jacob Sagan’s constituents were aware that Jacob Sagan has been handed two Belian concessions worth millions of ringgit, thanks to Taib’s Planning and Resources Ministry.
With what did Sagan pay for this concession?
Sagan at a party for SPDP, his party which is known for its loyalty for Taib and BN
Next, it is important to discover how much did Jacob Sagan pay for this secretive concession that has been granted to him in the land belonging to his own voters by the BN government of Taib Mahmud?
Such a valuable concession, worth millions of ringgit, should have cost a very great deal in premium payments to the statute.
However, on his salary as an MP of RM12,000 a month how could he afford this?
His previous career as a Sarawak civil servant could not legitimately have made him a rich man either!
At the moment, because Taib keeps all his timber negotiations a scandalous secret, we have no information about how much Sagan paid, if anything.
As a result, we are left with the inevitable conclusion that Sagan has paid for these concessions with the one thing that he has that is of value to Taib Mahmud, which is his political support.
Will any of Sarawak's trees be allowed to stay standing, as BN's MPs set about plundering what is left of the state?
So, if Taib has decided that he can make himself wealthier by flooding the people of Baram and using the electricity to power factories owned by himself, then BN MPs like Jacob Sagan have no choice but to support him.
It is plain that Jacob Sagan’s loyalty has been bought by Belian.
Because he has been bought by Belian, Jacob Sagan can no longer fight for what is right for his people.
So, even if Taib decides to flood their lands, destroy their livings and move all his relatives to resettlement towns with minimal compensation, Jacob Sagan has to keep supporting Taib.
If not, Jacob and his wife and family would lose their Belian concessions and have to live on their actual income of RM12,000 a month.
That might sound a very good salary for most people, but BN MPs have got used to living like kings, because they have sold their duty towards their people in return for licences to plunder them.

A SCAM IN THE MAKING - True stories of the victims being Scamed

True stories of the victims .............

Just wanna share....this just happened to me this morning at 10.00......A SCAM IN THE MAKING. I received a sms from this no 610100 , claiming that it is from Pos Malaysia and there is a vey urgent High Court document that was not collected from the post office. Please dial 0 for further information. When I dialed 0, a person answered the call asking my full name and NRIC,which I gave. The guy further said that there is a document which they have send to my house but nobody at home and it was returned and needs your urgent attention. They gave me a reference number 49951 and said there will be a guy calling you from the nearest post office to give you details of which branch to collect the documents. However, a person claiming to be an Inspector from Bukit Aman called by the name of Insp Kamarul Hisham Bin Ahmad from Bahagian Siasatan Jenayah. The number appeared in my mobile was 22662222 (they even have my h/p number). He claimed that I am involved in a money laundering scam and ask if I knew En Azmi Osman from JB, I said no. He said that I have opened a Savings account with Ambank JB and have transferred RM 100,000.00 to an overseas account and possible will be arrested or called for questioning at Bukit Aman. He said this is serious and ask for my full co-operation. I was terrified and shocked....he further said that I might be caught and interrogated if I dont co-operate. He then ask me to get a paper, pen and go somewhere quiet and started asking me questions which will be recorded. Questions are : 1) My Full name 2) My NRIC number 3) On 22/11/2011 , where was I coz on this date an account was opened with Ambank JB. 4) Did you transfer RM 100K to an overseas account. 5) Did you in the last 1 year given your documents to any 3rd party.....photocopy IC. 6) Letters were send to your house, did you receive them. The scam starts here - After all the questions, he ask me that to avoid this syndicate to further use your details, there is a form that you need to sign and fax to Bank Negara to protect you. I dont know how he is goin to get my signature but I started suspecting something is wrong and told him that I want the letters from Bukit Aman stating I am a suspect and involved in this scam. I ask him to fax to me the letters and only then will I go an make a police report with a lawyer and sign the document to Bank Negara. He didnt sound panic and said ok and ask for my fax number which I gave and now its about 1 hour and no faxes received from him. I immediately called the number (22662222), its actually from Bukit Aman but there is no one named Insp Kamarul. According to the Officer, there is a scam going on using the number of Bukit Aman to con the public. I further called Ambank and checked whether I have opened an account at JB,you guess it right, A BIG NO...NO, NO ACCOUNT opened there. SO ITS CONFIRMED A SCAM.....A NEW WAY OF GETTING YOU TO SIGN A DOCUMENT OR ASKING MONEY.......BE CAREFUL GUYS....IT JUST HAPPENED TO ME.

BN’s Dirty Datuks and Wealthy YBs

BN’s Dirty Datuks and Wealthy YBs

More Very Dirty Datuks – Naroden Majais & Hamden Bin Ahmad MAJOR EXPOSE!
This post is also available in: Iban, Malay

Dirty Datuk Naroden Majais and his wife Massenah Binti Ahmad are the sole shareholders of Nirwana Muhibbah Sdn Bhd

Our latest revelations come at the moment of another landmark court victory by a group of Iban villagers against the destruction of their lands by ruthless loggers, licensed by Taib.
Earlier this week 183 residents of Kampong Lebor, Serian, represented once again by the PKR leader and native rights lawyer, Baru Bian, won their epic case against the company Nirwana Muhibbah Sdn Bhd, which has been violating their Native Customary Rights lands, first through logging and then oil palm plantation for over a decade.
Since 1998 Nirwana Muhibbah has bulldozed their territory, polluted their water supply and planted oil palm without any recognition of the people’s rights, even though their communities have lived in the area since before the time of Rajah Brooke!
The judge is now assessing damages for these people against the Company, the Land & Survey Department (which ‘wrongfully’ provided the lease to the company) and the State of Sarawak, which permitted the outrage. Those damages include, according to the judge:

(a)Destruction of the plaintiffs‟ source of livelihood includes food valuable medicines, wildlife and other forest produce which the plaintiffs need and are dependant upon.(b) Extensive erosion and damage to the said native customary land. (c) Extensive pollution and silting of the rivers and streams, which the plaintiffs and the members of their community are dependant on for water supply and for their source of fish. (d)Damage to cultivated padi land. (e) Damage to fruit trees, rubber gardens and other essential trees and crops [Judgement Justice Clement Skinner, 23/02/12]

PKR Leader, Baru Bian brings the sweet news of victory to the people of Kampung Lebor who were waiting at the court
One particularly shocking incident that came to light in the case was that Nirwana Muhibbah had paid out a mere RM700 ringgit to the entire village as compensation for polluting their water supplies!
Licence for oil palm registered with the Land & Survey Department
So, who were the individuals hiding behind this company name and profiting to the tune of millions of ringgit at the expense of the local people? According to our information, leaked from the secretive Land & Survey Department and to company records, they are none other than yet another of Taib’s Dirty Datuks, the Assistant Minister for Entrepreneur Development, Naroden Majais and his wife!
The Directors and Shareholders of this logging and plantation company are Datuk Naroden Majais, Assistant Minister in Taib's State Government, and his wife!
And, why do we think Taib’s Land & Survey Department (of which the Chief Minister is Chairman) decided to hand 4,500 hectares of valuable timber and plantation land to Nirwana Muhibbah for such a very reasonable sum?
Elected politicians should not receive secret concessions from the state!
Do we think it is because after a process of open tender it was decided that this company was best suited to manage the land and offered a very good price or because Taib wanted to buy the political loyalty of Naroden Majais?
Giant timber concessions – Exclusive!
However, it turns out that Kampung Lebor was merely small beer for Datuk Naroden Majais. We have obtained new evidence that for the first time exposes the full shocking scale of this Dirty Datuk’s extraordinary land grabs.
Our new information, obtained from Forest Department records, reveals that the politician, who has a reputation for being an ultra-close confidant of Taib Mahmud, is one of the biggest timber concession holders in the state!
He and a fellow political insider Hamden Bin Ahmad are key shareholders in the company Peninsular Rise Sdn Bhd, which has been granted 7 vast tracts of logging territory amounting to an astonishing 840 square kilometres in North East Sarawak!
Peninsular Rise - 840 square kilometres of timber concessions
The revelation raises immediate and serious questions as to how two former civil servants working in two of Taib’s key Departments rose to acquire such enormous wealth in their roles as Ministers?
Datuk Hamden Bin Ahmad - state accountant turned multi-millionaire timber tycoon
Naroden Majais started out as a teacher and then an official at the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation.
Hamden Bin Hamza was an accountant in the Sarawak Land Development Board, before being parachuted into a state seat by Taib.
Since giving up that seat to the Head of Forestry, Len Talif Saleh, at the last state election, he has presided as a Director of the Taib family construction firm Naim Cendera and as the Treasurer of the massive state supported oil palm enterprise Sarawak Plantation Bhd.
The glaring question remains as to how did their civil servant and ministerial salaries enable these two men to acquire a 30% stake in this enormous timber concern, Peninsular Rise?
Because Taib is so secretive about how he hands out his licences the very existence of these concessions and the position of these two Datuks have remained unknown until now!
Datuks Majais and Bin Ahmad own Windynasty Sdn Bhd!
Much of the area of these concessions falls within the deeply controversial region of the Baram Dam. Villages bordering the concessions are Long Liam, Long San, Long Luding, Long Julan, Long Anap, Long Palai, Long Apu, which stand to be flooded if the dam is built.
Official company records for Windynasty show that it is owned by Datuk Naroden Majais and Datuk Hamden Bin Ahmad!
“Land grabbing a myth”! – Naroden Majais
In the light of these revelations it is worth recalling some of the remarks about land grabbing made by Naroden Majais over recent months, especially given the trampling of the rights of the people of Kampung Lebor by a company owned by himself and his wife.
He announced earlier this year for example that the complaints against the government for robbing landowners were “a myth”.

TEBEDU: Every single inch of the people’s land which are acquired by the government for development purposes will be compensated accordingly, assured assistant minister in the chief minister’s department Mohd Naroden Majais.
He said stories about the government robbing the people’s land, as claimed by the opposition during the recent state election, was only a myth.
“The government’s policy is clear. All land acquired for any projects will be compensated. Every single inch will be paid for, even when the projects were implemented for the benefit of the landowners themselves,” he said. [Naroden Majais, May 2011]

In which case, can Datuk Naroden Majais explain the outcome of the court case against him? Can he also explain how he has been able to complete the recent construction of his new and truly enormous house on the salary of a State Minister of some RM8,000 a month?
New mansion for Datuk Naroden Majais and his wife (and Co-Director of Nirwand Muhibbah Sdn Bhd)
Indeed, can he convincingly refute the widespread rumours that he and his fellow former local civil servant, Hamden Bin Ahmad, are in fact mere proxies, holding lands and concessions for the Chief Minister himself?
After all, a massive house like this is a very nice perk, but it hardly reflects the true value of the enormous concessions that Naroden apparently owns.
Why would Taib have handed such huge concessions to these two former civil servants, when they would surely have been very happy with such a house, a state assembly job and the concession of NCR land belonging to the poor people of Kampung Lebor?
Vast oil palm plantations as well!
The matter does not end here, because readers of Sarawak Report may well recall that Datuk Naroden Majais is also registered as one of the largest beneficiaries of oil palm concessions handed out by Taib, as recorded by the leaked Land & Survey documents that we have already released for all to see!
Datuk Naroden Majais was the registered contact for the concession of an enormous swathe of property that has been handed out to two companies, Hydroflow and Indranika, originally based at Lorong 9, Jalan Rubber, Kuching.
Huge swathes of property handed to these two companies, supposedly a peoples' cooperative
Standard practice? Like Datuk Jacob Sagan, Naroden Majais has made a practice of taking land from his own birthplace of Gedong, Simunjan, within his own constituency
Much play has been made about these two companies providing some form of profit sharing for the local people whose land was taken to supply these vast plantations.
Sounds better than it is! - the local people got just RM200 per annum from Hydroflow and Indranika's plantations. In return they lost their lands.
In fact only 30% of the shares of Hydroflow and Indranika Jaya have been signed over to the thousands of people who have lost lands.
Those shares are held through the companies Sadong Wibawa Bhd and Punggur Wibawa Bhd.
However, both of the companies are run from the offices of the main shareholder, which is a private company, WFM Enterprise Sdn Bhd.
It means none of the local people have any control over how the enterprise is run.
Thus, last year a grand ceremony was reported by the Sarawak Tribune (edited by Taib’s own daughter, Hanifah) at which supposed ‘interim dividends’ totaling RM575,400 for the year was paid to some 2,877 oil palm ‘shareholders’ from Simunjan and Gedong in the two concerns.
That represents a payment of RM200 per annum per person for the loss of their timber, lands and heritage!
WFM Enterprise
So where is the real profit being made? It will come as no surprise that the main shareholder of these vast concerns is now a private company which owns 70% of the enterprise and has a few key major shareholders.
Both Hydroflow and Indranika are 70% owned by WFM Enterprise Sdn Bhd. WFM is largely owned by one Kiong Goon Siong and a relative, Kiong Goon King. Kiong registered with the Land & Survey Department the same office address in Jalang Rubber as Naroden Majais, whom he replaced as the main contact for these companies, as well as assuming ownership.
The Siongs are associates of Naroden Majais and were registered at the same office by the Land & Survey Department
Under Sarawak’s secretive system run by Taib Mahmud, where timber and oil palm concessions are quietly given out to political and business cronies, it is hard to know who really owns what.
Main shareholders at Hydroflow and Indranika took over the same contact address as Naroden Majais
But, again the questions arise. How is it that Naroden Majais and Hamden Bin Ahmad have acquired so many timber concessions and oil palm concessions after their quiet careers working as civil servants in two of Taib’s key land departments?
How is that concession after concession has been handed out by the Forest Department and Land & Survey Department to wealthy YB Datuks Naroden and Ahmad?
Kuraya - another concession for Hamden Bin Ahmad
Why is it that even a forest reserve in Balingian is not protected from this pair?
Another vast concession in Baram region for Naroden!
More plantation land in Naroden's own birth region and constituency! Have his people put their trust in a wolf from their own community who is working for Taib?
Will Taib and BN start to answer these questions about how such vast lands have found their way into the hands of his own party men, BN’s Dirty Datuks?

Pakatan Rakyat Convention - 10 resolutions

Pakatan Rakyat Convention - 10 resolutions

You won't get this in the newspapers

The Pakatan Rakyat convention in Penang sent an unmistakable and chilling signal to arch rivals - Prime Minister Najib Razak and the Umno-BN coalition. Despite a roller coaster journey since sweeping to power in the 2008 general election, Pakatan has not been diminished by the enmity and malice unleashed by its political opponents, but has been able to mature and grow stronger in the process.

Indeed, the star-studded conference hall was packed with the likes of PAS president Hadi Awang, Mujahid Yusof Rawa, PKR president Wan Azizah, Selangor Mentri Besar Khalid Ibrahim, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and Karpal Singh.

Pakatan delegates and other members of the public who wanted to meet their 'reformasi' heroes were spoiled for choice. DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, who is also Penang Chief Minister, played host to the 2,000-strong
Crowd at the convention.

Racial policies rejected, preliminary 10-point manifesto unveiled.

In a rousing opening address, Guan Eng warned Prime Minister Najib Razak's Umno party not to 'hijack' the federal constitution and misinterpret the controversial Article 153 to divide the ethnic groups in the country.

"Somehow Umno always fails to mention that Article 153 also states that the legitimate interests of other communities must also be protected, Guan Eng said.

Guan Eng also unveiled a ten-point document to be signed by all the top Pakatan leaders and which is set to become the coalition's preliminary manifesto in the coming general election. The resolutions outline in detail the changes Pakatan will introduce within the first 100 days of its taking over Putrajaya if it wins the next general election expected to be held early next year.

The resolutions are:

1. A restructure of institutions including the Elections Commission (EC), the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the Attorney-General's Chambers and the Royal Malaysian Police. During a debate on the policy framework, DAP's Anthony Loke requested PR bring the MACC under the purview of Parliament.

2. A repeal of the Internal Security Act (ISA)

3. Instruct Khazanah Berhad, Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and other government bodies to take over highway assets from the concessionaires in order to abolish the toll system.

4. A restructure of the country's subsidies, to lessen subsidies given to the private sector (such as the RM19 billion in gas subsidies given to independent power producers) and transferring these to subsidies for the
Man on the street.

5. Acknowledging the role and sacrifices of civil servants by studying the current pay schemes and increasing the incentives for teachers by RM500 a month

6. Transferring private water concessions to the government

7. Offering free wireless Internet access to those in urban and semi-urban
Areas

8. Cancelling Felda Plantations and opening up its farms to second- and third generation Felda settlers.

9. Increasing oil royalty payments to Sabah, Sarawak, Terengganu and Kelantan to 20 per cent from 5 per cent currently.
10. Formation of a Royal Commission to solve the problem of illegal immigrants and citizenship issues in Sabah and Sarawak .

? May I add No. ? 11. To abolish the RM50 govt. Tax on the use of credit card. This tax is absolutely nonsense and unnecessary. We use credit card so as not to carry large amount of cash for our own safety. Now, by imposing this tax, the government is forcing us to carry large amount of cash thereby endangering our lives.? ?

Flash Floods Affecting Klang Valley Residents

Flash Floods Affecting Klang Valley Residents

KUALA LUMPUR, 8 MARCH, 2012: A continuous heavy downpour and flash floods since yesterday affected the daily routine of most residents in the Klang Valley following an extraordinary traffic congestion on major routes leading to Kuala Lumpur.

A check by Bernama found that heavy traffic congestions occurred at the entrance to the capital including at the Maju Expressway, Middle Ring Road Two and a North-South Expressway (PLUS).

A PLUS spokesman said traffic congestion was reported at the PLUS toll plaza heading to the city this morning due to the closure of the SMART tunnel since 6:30am.

Meanwhile, the continuous heavy rain had also resulted in the death of Raja Mohd Irfan Raja Azlan, 13, who died at 11.50pm while being treated at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital after being buried by a landslide for 30 minutes.

Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue department spokesman said Raja Mohd Irfan was buried by a landslide while playing at the back of the police quarters in Jalan Belfield, Kampung Attap last night and the Kuala Lumpur Hospital confirmed his death due to suffocation after being rescued by fire and rescue personnel.

Officer-in-charge of Hulu Langat Fire and Rescue station, Rafie Sapar said a total of 413 victims had been transferred to the surau at Kampung Belacan when the water level rose rapidly at 8.30pm.

"As of today, they are still at the surau while waiting for the water to subside," he said when contacted by Bernama.

He said a total of 150 houses were flooded in Kampung Belacan with the water level at two meters.

He said a fire and rescue team with 31 personnel, had provided four boats to evacuate people who were trapped in their homes.

He said flooding also occurred at Batu 12 Hulu Langat with 661 residents being transferred to the temporary relief centers at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Serai and Sungai Serai Hall.

"A total of 82 firefighters and seven boats were used to evacuate the victims after the water rose last night at 8pm and as of today, the water was still one and a half meters deep," he said.

Book on Tun Daim Zainuddin

ARE YOU SURPRISED ???

"An excellent writer and a piece of Malaysian history . . .and its “politics” since “Independence”
and a great Biographie . . ."

Books have been written about Tun Daim Zainuddin (pic above), but not many people know who the real Daim is. He is famous for being taciturn. Everyone knows that Daim is the silent type; so silent, in fact, that the victims of his scheming and conniving have fallen like ten pins without ever knowing what hit them. He has, on the quiet, made a career of shooting poison darts, laying booby traps. and knifing friend or foe in the back. His hand is never seen, but his mark is everywhere. Truth to tell, he has been at the root of many national crises, but his name has never been smudged, thanks to the wealth he wields and his bond of friendship with Dr. Mahathir.

Most members of Umno's new generation are aware that Daim is an acquisitive millionaire and a macho man with a taste of young women, but they concede him these weaknesses because they see in him a clean and competent Economic Adviser to the Government. But the generation of Harun Idris, Musa Hitam and Manan Othman to name just a few of the old hands - they are the ones to ask in order to discover who the real Daim is. It was Datuk Harun who plucked Daim up from the depths of failure in the salt business. Daim's wife, Mahani and Harun's wife, Salmah were good friends and an influential pair in the early 1970s. It was wife power that moved Harun to give Daim 160 acres of prime Kampung Pandan land. And thus Syarikat Maluri was born.

There is no use speculating over how much Daim paid Harun. After all, the two were fast friends. For the gory details, just ask Low Kiok Bow or Thamby Chik. They can relate how Daim cheated a land broker and greased Selangor state executive councillor and Mahathir's brother-in-law, Ahmad Razali for that piece of land.

Of course, Daim still had to pay for the land. In those days, it was not easy to borrow from a bank. Hence, he was forced to corrupt Bank Bumiputra. Lorraine Osman and Rais Saniman know how much he spent. Manan Othman can no doubt confirm the figure, he was so close to Daim that they tried to share a girl friend, with Manan often borrowing the bedroom at Daim's office in Taman Maluri.

Daim's elevation as Senator and, subsequently, Minister of Finance, was part of Mahathir's strategic plan. Mahathir's choice should surprise no one, after all the two were intimate friends from the same kampung in Seberang Perak, Alor Setar. Upon becoming Prime Minister on 16 July, 1981, the first thing on Mahathir's mind was how to sideline his archenemy, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah. Daim told everyone he had no interest in politics, but all the while he was confident of getting the Finance Minister's job after a stint with the Senate. A few months after joining the Senate, Daim became Chairman of Fleet, which owned the New Straits Times. In 1984, he finally got his dream job and became the third most important man in the Federal Cabinet, after the Prime Minister and his deputy.

Musa Hitam, the Deputy Prime Minister, was at first oblivious of the closet ties between Mahathir and Daim. Innocently, he expressed to Mahathir his disquiet over Daim's wheeling and dealing, particularly his award of projects and contracts to his own associates and cronies. It must have baffled him when his complaints fell on deaf ears although he was Deputy Prime Minister, he has no say when it came to economic matters, particularly privatisation and the assignment (to supporters) of economic projects. How disappointed Musa must have been to find that Daim could not care less about his effort to help his supporters secure some projects or contracts. Daim succeeded in making millionaires of such cronies of Wan Azmi, Halim Saad, Tajuddin Ramli,
Samsuddin Hassan, Razali Rahman and Tan Sri Basir, but Musa in the end was cast off as a poor ex-DPM. Musa once complained to Mahathir that Daim had stolen a number of supporters' project proposals, but again Mahathir ignored him. These were the first acts in the eventual breakup of the Mahathir-Musa partnership. As the interests of Mahathir and Razaleigh bloated, Musa got squeezed out.

Many Umno members assume that Razaleigh is Musa's number one enemy. In fact, the reason for the 1986 split in Umno must fall on Daim. It was he who drove Musa to the edge until he had no choice but to resign. Again, Daim's man of few words demeanour to his advantage. Few knew of his behind-the-scenes role in that Umno rupture not many more know it today. One really should not wonder why Musa called a truce Razaleigh and the two decided to collaborate in the 1987 fight, the one that eventually caused Umno to be outlawed. At that time, Daim was almost invincible, what support coming from such strongmen as Sanusi Junid and Anwar Ibrahim. The comradeship of the three was rock solid, and the Musa-Razaleigh camp could do nothing except to make a joke of it by giving them the nicknames AIDS.

The formation of the new Umno, Daim and Mahathir had first to get rid of the Lord President, Tun Salleh Abas. Again, Daim was the chief plotter in the sacking of the pious and respected Tun Salleh, and his replacement with Tun Hamid Omar, a playboy and chronic gambler, but Mahathir's and Daim's schoolmate. The appointment of Tun Hamid Omar triggered the collapse of the integrity and the independence of the judiciary.

Finance Minister, Daim persuaded Mahathir to give the Economic Planning Unit and Treasury full power in implementing the privatisation policy. Hence, it was no longer necessary to call for tenders for government projects. Instead, the projects were awarded directly to favoured companies. And so began the era of wealth accumulation by him and his cohorts. The United Engineers Company, bought for RM2, changed into a multi-million- ringgit corporation. As Finance Minister, Daim practically ordered banks to lend to companies that he himself owned. And no Daim crony every complained of difficulty in securing bank credit. Indeed, bankers lived in fear of Daim. Having appointed Wan Azmi and Basir to head Malayan Banking and Bank Bumiputra, he would give any project to any of his cronies because funding was not an issue.
If those physical projects were not enough, Daim also took every opportunity to take wealth from the share market as well. Every time the Treasury approved a company for listing on the stock exchange, Daim cronies received their lion's shares. That was how Southern Bank, Resort World, Sports Toto, Berjaya, Tanjong and scores of other blue chip firms landed with Daim and Company. Once, when share values were high, Daim boasted among friends that his visible wealth alone totalled RM65 billion. To shut the mouth of Barisan Nasional leaders, Daim gave lucrative projects to Samy Vellu and Ling Liong Sik so that their children could be big-shots in batches.

Daim managed to fool Umno members into believing that Mahathir would not let him go although he had asked to be relieved of his Cabinet post on a number of occasions. With Musa and Razaleigh out of the picture, Daim could grab as much wealth as he wanted without even Mahathir stopping him. Besides, he was Umno's treasurer and he could make it look as if the companies he controlled were those in which the party had a stake.

Daim's avarice damaged not only his own image as finance minister, but also Mahathir's and Malaysia 's reputation with the international community. It is said that he used to demand exorbitant fees for himself in negotiating contracts involving foreign suppliers. The chairmen of Japan 's two biggest banks - the Bank of Tokyo and Sanwa Bank - once complained to Mahathir that his Finance Minister demanded commissions that were too high when negotiating yen loans. Margaret Thatcher, too, has complained about Daim's role as a commissioned agent. He had - or still has - accounts in Zurich , London , Hong Kong, Tokyo , Singapore , Caymen Island , Channel Island and Virgin Island . Indeed, instead of keeping his billions in Malaysia , he has stashed them overseas.
With his immense wealth and far-reaching influence, Daim eventually became a burden that Mahathir could no longer bear. In every deal he made, there was something in it for himself. It was not beneath him even to conspire with Lee Kuan Yew to snatch KTM land in Singapore . The Malaysian Cabinet had no knowledge of this. But this issue of Malaysia being cheated by Lee Kuan Yew and Daim is far from over.

Mahathir eventually realised that he had to end Daim's lordship over the Finance Ministry. And so he told him to quit.

Mahathir worried that if Daim continued as Finance Minister, complaints would come not only from Vincent Tan, Ananda Krishnan, Arumugam and other members of the Malaysian business elite, but also from foreign leaders. Signs of a Daim-related scandal were ominous and it could break anytime in Japan or Britain , therefore, Daim had to go.

Daim's resignation was planned such that it would not appear as if he had been sacked. Indeed, it does not make sense why a powerful Finance Minister, rich and in control of so many public companies, would suddenly quit simply because he had lost interest in the job. The truth is that he was ordered to resign. Observers will recall that Mahathir's first comment on the so-called reaction was, 'He has asked several times for permission to resign, and I have finally allowed it. I hope Daim would not leave the country after resigning'. That statement was pregnant with meaning. Mahathir knew Daim was sulking. So did Anwar and Sanusi. Mahathir retained Daim as Umno Treasurer for a good reason, he wanted to ensure the safety of Umno money, a lot of which was under Daim's control.

But Daim who holds so many of Mahathir's secrets, is only a sly one. After resigning, he ran off to live in his San Francisco residence. He told the Malaysian public he wanted to study at Harvard, but in fact he wanted to leave Malaysia . Mahathir, who was familiar with Daim's antics, pleaded with him to come back, saying he need him to advise on economic matters. Daim returned and announced that Mahathir had named him Economic Adviser to the Government. Rafidah asked Mahathir to confirm this, but all she got was silence. Daim was never formally appointed as Economic Adviser, a post which Tun Raj a Mohar once held. The appointment is the prerogative of the Public Services Department. Daim gave himself the job. To keep Daim happy, Mahathir allowed him to open an office at the Economic Planning Unit, and this strengthened the public perception that he was still in control as far as economic affairs were concerned.

When he was to told to resign as Finance Minister, Daim asked Mahathir to appoint Anwar Ibrahim to the job. Obviously, he thought this would help to ensure that his skeletons would remain closeted. He warned Mahathir of the peril that Rafidah would be to both of them: the secrets they shared would be uncovered. Daim also persuaded Mahathir to appoint Mustapha Mohammad as Anwar's deputy because these two could be depended on to fill up the holes he had left gaping. Anwar is nobody's fool, but he sacrificed his idealism to protect his towkay.

As far as we know, no Finance Minster in this world has retired a billionaire, except Daim. In the book Daim yang Diam: Sebuah Biographi (Daim the Silent: A Biography), Daim explains his retirement: 'I am happy in retirement. It was too heavy a responsibility. In truth, I love the business world. Business is in my blood. I love to make money. I know how to do it. I can do it just by sitting in this chair. On a lucky day, I can make millions.'

Friend of Soros

According to an internal bank analysis, collaborated by the corporate community, and from Daim crony Amin Shah, Daim's wealth, in ringgit and foreign currencies kept overseas currently amounts to RM20 billion. With so much money at his disposal, Daim can manipulate the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange. He showed his hand in 1991, just to prove how much influence he wielded. After selling off his stocks, he made a statement to the effect that the market would crash. And crash it did. As we can all recall, even Mahathir could not help but make a wry remark when Daim boasted that he invested in KLSE only for pocket money. But to his good friend, Daim said he could turn in profit on RM90 million a day when the market was up. When the market plummeted in October 1991 Daim bought back his share on the cheap. When the market turned bullish again 1995 and 1996, Daim made billions of ringgit from it. This, then, is what the work of an economic adviser amounts to.

So it turns out that Soros is not the only big time market manipulator and currency dealer. Daim met Soros twice in London when the ringgit was being hotly traded. Anyway, when the ringgit fell below RM4 to the US dollar, Mahathir asked Daim for help and, according to a source in Singapore, he lost RM1 billion trying to prop up the Malaysian currency. To lose that much in currency trading, imagine how much money he had at his disposal.

The falls in currency and share values put Mahathir in a feverish panic. He knew his policies and his own belligerent attitude were partly to blame. Seeing Mahathir in such a frenzied state, Daim recommended that he declare a state of emergency to enable him to restore the economy and at the same time, bury the corpses that were beginning to stink. We hail the Chief Secretary to the Government and the Solicitor-General for opposing the move.. If Daim's plan had been followed, Mahathir would turn dictator and the Malaysian economy would be utterly ruined. Having failed to declare an emergency, Mahathir set up the National Economic Action Council, headed by Daim, with the Economic Planning Unit as its Secretariat. The original plan was to give the NEAC complete autonomy, but the Cabinet ministers opposed this for fear that they would lose any vestige of power they had left. Eventually, the council became merely an advisory body, with the Cabinet having final say on its recommendations.

The establishment of the council was a wedge between Anwar and Daim. Thus, two old friends who had together stood behind Mahathir against Musa were now turned against each other. All of the council's recommendations were rejected by the Cabinet and Bank Negara. Daim openly assailed Bank Negara for dismissing his proposals, such as those relating to interest rates and credit control. We salute the Bank Negara Governor for maintaining a prudent monetary policy in the face of Daim's bullying and insults. Unlike Daim and his cohorts, Bank Negara's officials are not self-serving. Daim's appointment to the NEAC was a major national mistake.

Going by press reports of its deliberations so far, the NEAC's sole preoccupation is with saving mega corporations from bankruptcy. No doubt, these are Daim-related companies. Daim has yet to show any concern over the rise in the price of chillies, or the leaps in fish prices or how the price of rice has boiled over. Neither has he talked about small businesses in their death throes. Class F contractors going bankrupt or kampung road projects being abandoned. In his dictionary, there are no entries for the small man's worries, nothing about low-cost houses, water cuts or study funds for the children of poor Malays. In fact, it contains only billion size figures. While the Malaysian economy is close to ruin, Daim remains a billionaire, living a life of glamour, jet setting with his new wife Naimah and the attractive Josephine , an Indian lass who helps him run one of his firms, the International Malaysian Bank.

We have merely given a sketch of who the real Daim is. A thorough account will soon be available in book form. We recommend the book to Umno members, especially those with big ambitions, because they will learn much from its fantastic but true tales of economic and political intrigues. We denounce the likes of Vincent Tan and Tan Phek Khiing for land-grabbing, but perhaps we should ask the Menteri Besar of Johor and the Menteri Besar of Kedah how much land Daim has taken. Ask Sanusi how much Daim paid to the Kedah government for 12,000 acres in Sungai Petani and how much profit he made from them. For 12,000 acres, Osman Arof had to be sacrificed. The true story of the Daim-Sanusi conspiracy in Kedah will be exposed in the book.

Umno is at a crossroads and has to decide wisely where it is going. One road heads to glory, where stability and democratic practice will abide. The other leads to division, autocracy and ultimately, utter destruction. The call for reform, which used to be made only in whispers at small, secretive gatherings, is becoming louder. Umno members, showing that they can no longer contain their restiveness and frustration, have begun to openly debate the need for change, even at party conventions. Can there be a clearer indication that they have reached their tether's end, that they can no longer stomach the leadership's undemocratic attitude and the prevalence - whether in the party or the government - of favouritism, cronyism, nepotism, graft and other misdeeds? Malay nationalism is dead and materialism and egoism are running amok.

We cannot depend on the Umno Supreme Council to initiate reform because few of the members have the guts to speak up. In fact, the council has lately been transformed into a monologue theatre. But of course even a monologue can flop without good supporting players - fools, clowns, jesters, attendants and the oh-so- important flatterers. As far as these bit players are concerned, Umno's ideals and principles are not as important as their jobs. This keep-your-mouth- shut syndrome serves only to embolden the party leadership in its conceit, arrogance and haughtiness. A president has become a dictator. Woe are the Malays and Umno. What is to become of them? That is a question only Umno members can answer.

Let’s stop Malaysia going Greek

By Kee Thuan Chye

The United Malays National Organisation (Umno) is beyond redemption. At its general assembly in December, the message it sent out was suspicion of others and hatred for them, and a desperate desire to win the next general election.

Its president, Najib Razak, once again proved what many of us have long suspected – that he is a dissembler. He exposed the ultimate lie behind his 1Malaysia slogan by saying things that would divide the races rather than bring them together. He set the trend for delegates at the assembly to harp on the threats to Umno from other races. It was disgraceful coming from the Prime Minister of the country. It was supremely irresponsible.

Worse, two days after the assembly ended, he appealed to the right-wing NGO Pertubuhan Kebajikan dan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Pekida) for support. This has to be the final nail in the 1Malaysia coffin.

To cap it all, Umno showed its partiality to cronyism by defending Wanita Umno leader Shahrizat Abdul Jalil over the scandal surrounding her family’s business, the National Feedlot Corporation. One or two colleagues called for her to step down, but the overwhelming majority stood by her and castigated the Opposition for exposing the scandal.

This begs the question: Can Umno change? As the major party in the Barisan Nasional (BN) government, can it truly stand up for other races as well, and work for their wellbeing? Can it stay clear of corrupt practices? Can it stop dishing out favours and projects to party leaders and their cronies? Can it save Malaysia from financial meltdown or will it rather bleed our coffers dry?

The online news website The Malaysian Insider sums it up eloquently: “Umno looks set to win the polls in the next general election but looks woefully ill-equipped to lead a multiracial country. … One expects delegates to articulate a vision to continue its previous success but that did not happen. Instead, delegates harped on age-old themes of having their culture and faith eroded by political foes taking over the country. That they are the only guarantee of faith and culture. What about the economy? What about the reforms? What about Malaysia? … Everything is centred around Umno. … But they didn’t articulate the vision for continued success. … Instead, everyone is at fault except those in Umno.”

And yet Najib could tell Pekida: “If we miscalculate and choose the wrong side, our country could very much end up like Greece.” Surely, he must mean that the wrong side would be BN. The way it has been going – awarding projects to cronies who have no track record; continuing to allow overpriced purchases by government departments, despite what the Auditor-General uncovers year after year; giving out money like there’s no tomorrow in order to win votes, such as the substantial pay rise for civil servants – BN is more likely to lead us down that way.

The civil service is bloated, with 1.4 million employees, but Najib criticised Pakatan Rakyat (Pakatan) for suggesting it should be trimmed. According to his top public service official, 1.4 million is “the right size”. How this is so puzzles me. Japan has a population of 127 million and its civil servants number is just over a million. We have a population of 28 million and our civil service is as large as Japan’s. It seems to me that trimming down the civil service is more likely to save us from going Greek.

And so I think we should not take any more risks with Umno. Especially now that we have an alternative. Pakatan has shown itself capable of running the four states under it and earned positive ratings from the Auditor-General and a few others. It’s time to see whether it can bring reform to the country.

Najib of course insists that Pakatan will lead us to our doom, but what are his words worth anyhow?

At the Umno general assembly, he presented a grossly untruthful picture of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) to strike fear into the hearts of the Malays. He accused the party of being anti-Malay, anti-Islam and anti-royalty.

But after the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) won Terengganu in the 1999 general election, who stopped the state that is 90% populated by Malays from getting its oil royalties and substituted it with the lesser Wang Ehsan? Was it the DAP?

Who created a constitutional crisis in 1983 and curtailed the powers of the Malay royalty? Was it the DAP?

In 2008, who protested against the Terengganu Sultan for not accepting Idris Jusoh as the Menteri Besar, and insulted His Highness with the word “natang” (animal)? Was it the DAP?

Who gave away citizenships overnight to immigrants, legal and illegal, in Sabah to ensure they kept Umno there in power? Was it the DAP?

So where is the truth in Najib’s warning that if BN did not continue to be the government, the Malays would be under threat? Who has proven to be the real threat?

But still, he called on Pekida “to defend the current government” – to guarantee the special position of the Malays, the dignity of Islam, the preservation of the Malay royalty. He thumped his chest and yelled, “We are warriors!” and “We will not surrender even an inch!” He led the crowd in cries of “Hidup Melayu!”

Someone was moved to comment on Facebook, “Listening to what Najib said, it feels like we’re at war.”

A knowing friend warned me: “Do you know what Pekida is about? They are like gangsters. They have secret codes, like particular handshakes or the way they hold their cigarettes. They have two million members. These are the people we should worry about.”

Indeed, when the film KL Gangster came out last year [2011], Pekida objected to its portrayal of secret codes and use of words like “abang long” and “ayahanda” that apparently cut too close to reality.

This prompted blogger Ibnu Hasyim to ask, “Apakah benar kononnya filem itu membuka ‘kod rahsia pertubuhan’ Pekida? … Terkejut kita, apakah pertubuhan dakwah itu pun mempunyai ciri-ciri pertubuhan bawah tanah atau gangster? Pekida adalah Gangster Melayu? Perlukah pertubuhan itu disiasat polis? Mana ada dakwah dan kebajikan pakai ‘kod rahsia’ pertubuhan?” (Is it true that the film apparently exposed “secret organisational codes” of Pekida? … We are shocked, does this missionary organisation have the characteristics of an underworld or gangster organisation? Pekida equals Malay Gangsters? Should the police investigate this organisation? Why would missionary and welfare organisations use “secret codes”?)

Najib’s appeal to Pekida and his words at the Umno assembly spell desperation. That’s clear to see because Umno has no case left to make for its continued rule. News of its corruption is bursting out. Soon after the general assembly ended, the Singapore Straits Times reported that ex-Menteri Besar Abdul Hamid Pawanteh was involved in the Alstom bribery case. He has, however, denied it.
Earlier, questions had been raised about Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi allegedly flying to Saudi Arabia for his haj in a private jet, and about “ridiculously overpriced” rural development projects in Sabah allegedly linked to senior BN politicians. The worms are crawling out of the can.

Umno cannot defend itself. So it lashes out at enemies. It fabricates untruths about its enemies. Sadly – and sickeningly – Umno resorts to rousing tribal emotions and harping on the issues of race and religion. After 54 years in power, it still plays those explosive cards.

As the blogger Sakmongkol AK47 puts it: “Umno gets on by making Malays believe that they are being besieged, attacked, assaulted and victimised. That’s how Umno can survive. How does it do that? By fabricating lies and manufacturing stories. The Chinese are going to eat you up. The Chinese are going to Christianise you. They are going to wipe out the sultans, ban the use of Bahasa Malaysia, and abolish Jawi and so forth. You feed on people’s irrational fear. You want to maintain stupid and mute people. Can you sustain whole people like that, turning people into xenophobes? I say this is a recipe for destroying Malays, not cultivating them to become self-confident people.”

Umno has been doing that for decades. It has not evolved. So how can it change? How can such a party still be allowed to rule multiracial, multi-religious, multicultural Malaysia?
If we continue to vote for it at the next general election, what would that make us? Dumb and dumber?

Rights in Malaysia – No action, talk only
K Pragalath
January 23, 2012

HRW's latest report claims that the government's efforts in promoting human rights leave a lot to be desired.

PETALING JAYA: The state of human rights in Malaysia is filled with promises of reforms and politicians backtracking their words, according to Human Rights Watch’s 22nd annual report entitled World Report 2012 that was released yesterday.

The report looked into eight key issues in Malaysia but the one main issue was Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s Sodomy II trial.

HRW noted that Anwar’s legal team was denied access to the prosecution’s witness list, critical forensic samples for independent examination, and medical examiners’ notes from hospital examinations of the accuser – all in violation of international fair trial standards.

Anwar has since been acquitted on Jan 9 due to questionable DNA evidence and the Attorney General’s Chambers has filed an appeal last week.

Violations against freedom of expression, association and assembly are also well documented in the report, through the Bersih rally on July 9 last year and the detention of six political activists under the Emergency Ordinance.

“Malaysia’s leaders are fooling themselves by thinking they can backtrack on public promises to respect the rights to demonstrate peacefully and criticize the government without fear.

“The more Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and government politicians play their game of big talk, with little action on rights, the more they should expect popular pushback,” said Phil Robertson, deputy director for Asia region at Human Rights Watch on these violations.

Media censorship

Under the sub-heading of media censorship, HRW stated that Home Ministry has continued to deny online news portal Malaysiakini rights to publish newspapers on the grounds that publishing permit was “a privilege,” not a right.

It also criticised the proposed reforms on the Printing Presses and Publications Act. Under the reform measures, annual licensing for print has been revoked but the Home Minister retains broad authority, without judicial review, to refuse permission to publish anything he determines “likely to be prejudicial to public order, morality, security … or national interest.”

The report also highlighted Najib’s announcement to repeal the controversial Internal Security Act 1960 and the revocation of the three emergency proclamations and the review of the Restricted Residence Act.

“However, he committed to introducing two new laws under article 149 (Special Laws against Subversion) of the Federal Constitution, which allows parliament to enact sweeping security provisions that deny basic freedoms.

The Malaysia – Australia refugee swap deal signed on July 25, but eventually cancelled, was also criticised in the report because Malaysia has not ratified the 1951 Refugee Convention which means that Malaysia had failed to differentiate refugees, asylum seekers, trafficking victims, and undocumented migrants.

The swap deal would have permitted Australia to send 800 asylum seekers to Malaysia for refugee screening in exchange for 4,000 refugees. However an Australian High Court judgment deemed the swap deal as illegal.

The Malaysian Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act was also rubbished as it failed to provide protection to the victims

Sexual orientation

Under the topic of sexual orientation and gender identity, the government’s refusal to repeal Article 377B of the Penal Code, which criminalizes consensual “carnal intercourse against the order of nature”, was criticised.

HRW highlighted the banning of Seksualiti Merdeka which was a seven day festival for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community to express their issues.

It also highlighted the case of Aleesha Farhnan Abdul Aziz who failed to compel the National Registration Department to recognise him as a female.

The HRW was also concerned about the freedom of religion among the minorities following a raid by the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department on Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC)

PAS slaps rebel Kedah leader with gag order
By Shazwan Mustafa Kamal

KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 — Kedah PAS leader Datuk Phahrolrazi Mohd Zawawi confirmed today he has been barred by the party from making any more statements on the current crisis in the state administration.

The Kedah PAS deputy commissioner I said he had been directed by the PAS central committee not to issue any more statements for now, and that the directive was given to him when he attended a meeting at the PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday night.

“I was called to the headquarters and told not to say anything until a meeting between PAS central committee leaders and the division,” he was quoted by The Star as saying today.

Phahrolrazi (picture), who is also Kuala Kedah PAS division chief, said he would explain his actions to PAS central committee leaders at a meeting scheduled for tonight, and will include why he did not want to renew his tenure as state executive councillor and why he had directed his division deputy chairman Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah to also quit his state post.

PAS’s entire central leadership will meet its Kedah leaders today to solve the situation. An emergency central working committee meeting was held last Thursday but leaders were unable to resolve the matter.

The meeting was held after both Kedah PAS deputy commissioners Phahrolrazi and Datuk Dr Ismail Salleh rejected their reappointments to the state executive council (exco), leaving just eight instead of 10 being sworn in on Tuesday.

Vice-president Salahuddin Ayub said on Thursday all central committee members would attend the meeting with Kedah PAS this weekend with “both sides” to reach a final solution to the matter.

Phahrolrazi has said he refused the appointment as he could no longer work with Azizan and their differences had reached a “critical” level.

However, Phahrolrazi suggested he could be persuaded to rejoin the exco on certain conditions but refused to disclose what they were.

The PAS leadership said earlier this week it wanted all 10 current Kedah state excos sworn in for the 2012 term.

The Islamist party’s secretary-general, Datuk Mustafa Ali, confirmed rumours that Phahrolrazi and Ismail had declined to accept their re-appointments, but stressed that the matter was only a “technical issue.”

He said that PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang had met with Azizan as well as the two excos on February 17, where they had explained to him the “difficulties” in continuing their duties.
