Open season on Lim Guan Eng

Open season on Lim Guan Eng

April 06, 2012

APRIL 6 — Umno has apparently declared “open season” on Lim Guan Eng.

That they have been stalking their favourite target for years, even

well before he came into prominence, is an open secret.

If they had not maligned, abused and subjected him to unremitting

muck-raking and mudslinging, these Umno stormtroopers would have felt

totally inadequate and that something was missing from their miserable

existence.

They would, like their brown-shirted, fair-haired and blue-eyed Aryan

cousins of the Third Reich, have felt that they were not fulfilling

their historic destiny which is to cause as much mayhem as the police,

in their accustomed manner and wisdom, would allow. It is all in the

name of upholding “ketuanan Melayu”, and nothing should be allowed to

stand in their way, not even the rule of law. Years of blatant abuse

with impunity by Mahathir Mohamad who, in cahoots with his Umno

henchmen, succeeded by means fair and foul, mainly foul, in distorting

the systems of orderly governance as provided for under our

constitutional arrangements.

Imputations of improper motives such as in the case of “the

disappearing mosque land” and innuendos that any fair-minded Malaysian

would regard as completely beyond the pale are standard fare to be

dished out to the likes of Lim Guan Eng as and when it takes their

fancy. What is grotesquely ironic in all of this is that the driving

force behind the campaign to “put the non-Malays in their place” is a

bunch of bloody-minded, misguided “constitutional” Malays who have

been manipulating the Malays for ages.

For all their professed Malayness I am told the majority speak Tamil

at home. We are free to speak any language. However, those claiming to

be Malays must not only practise Malay customs and traditions but also

habitually speak the Malay language. That is what the Constitution

says. But you have to give it to them: they know Malay weaknesses

instinctively and are quick to exploit them.

But then, the Malay is an open book. I do not always see eye to eye

with Mahathir, but reluctantly I agree with him when he says Malays

have a short memory and this has worked to his advantage. Racist I am

not; I am just against any form of hypocrisy, barefaced or otherwise.

I suppose it would be totally unrealistic to expect a party that is

morally deficient in respect of civilised conduct to conform even to

minimum universal ethical standards. Where then is Umno’s legitimacy

to govern? They bleat or, more in keeping with the time in which we

live, moo, “But we have the people’s mandate.” Buying the so-called

people’s mandate with state funds certainly does not confer on Umno

the right to lead this nation.

In a more open and democratic society, the rule of law would ensure

that those lording over us and robbing us blind in the process would

by now be repenting at leisure (and that is being charitable in

assuming they have a conscience) in the blissful peace of a secure

prison at Sungai Buloh. Under the current regime where corruption has

been allowed to develop into a fine art form, a prison term for the

corrupt is a contradiction of Umno’s sacrosanct political philosophy

of no growth without bribery. Naturally all this is being sanctified

in the name of Hidup Melayu with the right connections.

In the present political climate and mood of desperation, much in

evidence in Umno circles, they will give a damn for public opinion.

This is nothing new to them as they have always treated public opinion

with disdain. How else do we account for the unbridled excesses we see

unfolding before our eyes with regular monotony? Guan Eng can always

hope for the best but he knows deep inside as long as he continues to

make a success of his stewardship of Penang, and as long as he has no

truck with unethical practices, he will continue to be harassed and

even physically threatened by Umno thugs.

Some of his detractors are saying that if he cannot stand the heat, he

should get out of the kitchen. It is not the kitchen fire as we

understand it that bothers Guan Eng. It is hell fire and brimstone

that he is being forced to live through each day all because he is

playing by a different, more open and accountable set of rules. Others

are saying “The man doth protest too much.” When William Shakespeare

wrote these words, he had not the faintest idea that there would be a

time when protesting too much against political thuggery in

undemocratic and corrupt Umno-led Malaysia would be completely

justifiable.

It has become a matter of life and death. It is, in my view, more

correct to say that Lim Guan Eng is agonising as the rest of us over

the sorry state of affairs in our once fair land. Unlike most of us,

Guan Eng is sticking his neck out to help bring about a better

Malaysia for all. If he “doth protest too much”, it is his life and

limb he is talking about and given what we saw on Padang Kota Lama

during an anti-Lynas rally recently, wouldn’t you, if you were in his

place, demand police protection? I know I would.

Burger Stall in Private House - Lim Guan Eng

DAP condemns the “burger protest” by pro-BN and anti-Bersih supporters, which set up an illegal burger stall outside Bersih co-chairperson Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan’s house to protest against their claims of purported loss of income suffered due to the Bersih 3.0 rally on 28 April 2012. Is rule of law in Malaysia now replaced by rule of the jungle?

I fail to understand how DBKL can allow a burger stall to be set up outside a private residence with impunity in Kuala Lumpur? By failing to act against the “burger protest” set up illegally outside Datuk Ambiga’s house, BN and DBKL is subjecting her to undue harrassment, intimidation and invasion of privacy. Will DBKL allow a similar protest outside the private home of Ministers or the DBKL’s Mayor residence?

Such an act of harrassment, intimidation and invasion of privacy has no place in our peaceful country, where Malaysians live together in mutual harmony and respect. Moreover, the symbolic act of setting up burger stalls and cooking meat as a protest outside Ambiga’s home is extremely disrespectful considering that the former Bar Council president is a vegetarian.

As Ambiga herself noted yesterday, such acts have “never happened in Malaysia, except to Lim Guan Eng. Now (he) and I have had our homes violated.” Yesterday, my own family’s privacy was invaded by a group of Perkasa members who performed a “funeral rite” intruding on my private space, by placing on my gate a garland of flowers over a framed photo of me to signify my “death”.
Clearly this is the first time that such a death “wish” or death “threat” is made against a Chief Minister. What is equally clear is that the police present were indifferent and did not stop the Perkasa members from violating my private space.

It is the right of every Malaysian to be able to protest his or her own issues, but to do so by intruding into personal space and invading the privacy of family homes or wishing for the death of anyone is utterly vile, completely disrespectful and contrary to the basic tenets of democracy.
DAP calls on BN and DBKL to immediately remove the stall outside Datuk Ambiga’s home as a mark of respect towards not only to democracy and rule of law but to establish and uphold civil society.

Speech by Lim Guan Eng

Speech by Lim Guan Eng whilst campaigning for the PAS candidate in the Tenang By-Election on Tuesday, 25th January 2011 at 8 pm

The 4 PR states RM25 billion investments have beat the other

10 BN states attracted 53% of Malaysia's total investments of

RM47.2 billion in 2010

The 4 PR states of Penang, Selangor, Kedah and Kelantan have beaten the other 10 BN states by attracting RM25 billion in investments comprising 53% of Malaysia's total investments of RM47.2 billion in 2010. For the first time in history, Penang is now the new champion of investments in Malaysia, coming out top in 2010.

Penang replaced the previous 2009 champion Sarawak by recording RM 12.2 billion in 2010 as compared to Sarawak RM3.9 billion. Penang was No. 4 in 2009 with RM 2.1 billion but shot up 5 times to No.1. On the other hand Sarawak went down from No.1 in 2009 with RM 8.5 billion to No. 4 with RM3.9 billion in 2010. Penang's success in drawing in RM12.2 billion is an extraordinary vote of confidence by both foreign and local investors in the PR state government of Penang.

The No.2 state after Penang is another PR state of Selangor with RM 10.6 billion in investments. In fact the 4 PR states of Penang, Selangor, Kedah and Kelantan combined comprise RM 25 billion investments or 53% of the total investments in Malaysia of RM47,177 million in 2010. These 4 PR states alone can beat the remainder 10 states of BN Malaysia combined!

Despite the financial constraints and limitations imposed by BN, PR have shown our good governance. In Penang we have excelled by being praised by the Auditor-General Report for being the best financially managed state with record surpluses of RM88 million in 2008 and RM77 million in 2009. Penang became the first state government in history to be commended by Transparency International for CAT(Competency, Accountability and Transparency) governance in establishing integrity in leadership.

We have wiped out hard-core poverty, the first state to do so in Malaysia. We are giving senior citizens RM100 every year and when they die, their beneficiaries a one-off RM1,000/-. All partially assisted schools of Chinese,Tamil and Sekolah Agama Rakyat are given a fixed sum of at least RM11.3 million every year. We are working towards a wifi state offered free of charge.

Penang is going green and leading in green practices such as "No Free Plastic Bag" campaigns and waste treatment through 3R of Reduce, Reuse Recycle. Penang enjoys the cheapest water rates in the country. Penang is also the Silicon Valley of Malaysia and selected as the most livable city in Malaysia on par with Kuala Lumpur. We have done more in 3 years what BN fail to do in 51 years.

So who says that PR can not govern. We may not have the experience but neither do we have the experience to cheat or be corrupt. PR has proven that a clean government can outperform corrupt governments. Voters of Tenang should choose PR that offers a better future not only for you but for your children.

PR is the better choice because we embrace the future. We embrace the future by embracing each and every one of you whether Malays, Indians, Chinese, Kadazans and Ibans as Malaysian brothers and sisters, Malaysian sons and daughters. Let us grow together, learn together and enjoy the success together.

Guan Eng denies DAP gave information to WikiLeaks

Guan Eng denies DAP gave information to WikiLeaks

KEPALA BATAS: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said claims that the party had leaked information on PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy case to Singapore as exposed in the WikiLeaks, was a baseless accusation.

Lim said the accusations levelled at DAP were just an effort to discredit the party.

He added that DAP did not have any diplomatic relationship with the Singapore government, let alone the Singapore intelligence.

“So, where did the WikiLeaks information come from? Diplomatic relations? Currently DAP has no powers to establish any kind of diplomatic relationship. So, what kind of relationship do we have with the Singapore intelligence?” he told reporters at the Pakatan Rakyat Convention here on Sunday.

On Saturday, former head of Selangor PKR Youth Hamidzun Khairuddin wanted DAP to clarify how Singapore’s Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew knew of Anwar’s alleged sodomy activities that were exposed in the WikiLeaks website recently.

Hamidzun was reported to have said that it was no secret that DAP had a close political relationship with the Singapore government, especially with Lee.

He added that details and confidential information of Anwar’s sodomy case was with DAP chairman Karpal Singh since he was representing Anwar in the sodomy case.-Bernama
