Haze from Indonesian fires causes pollution spike in Malaysia

Haze from Indonesian fires causes pollution spike in Malaysia

Pollution readings soared past the 200-point level in the Malaysian government's hourly air-quality index on Sunday morning (local time).
Acrid smoke billowing from agricultural fires in Indonesia has caused a spike in air pollution in Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur.
The Ministry of Education ordered schools shut on Monday in the capital and three states due to health concerns, the second time this month it has had to issue such an order.
On Saturday, as the haze built up, an airport just outside Kuala Lumpur closed temporarily as visibility dropped to less than 400 metres.
The closure forced at least 20 flights to be cancelled, according to Malaysian media reports, and followed Singapore's shuttering of schools on Friday as air there worsened to "hazardous" levels.
Parts of Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore have been shrouded for weeks in a choking smoke haze from tinder-dry parts of Indonesia's Sumatra island.
The haze crisis — the worst since mid-2013 — grips the region nearly every year during the dry season, when agricultural land is illegally cleared by burning.
Indonesia has faced pressure from its neighbours to address the problem since it first emerged about 20 years ago.
But the issue has persisted, especially as plantations have expanded, driven in large part by rising global demand for palm oil, a key ingredient in a vast range of everyday consumer products.
Malaysian skies have been a smoky grey for most of the past month, and authorities on September 15 ordered schools closed in Kuala Lumpur and neighbouring states.
On Friday, Singapore's foreign minister K Shanmugam lashed out at what he called "shocking statements" by senior Indonesian officials perceived as making light of the problem.
Haze levels in Singapore had improved by Sunday, dropping below the "unhealthy" mark.
Indonesian authorities have indicated the problem may not clear up anytime soon.
National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the "fires continue to rage" despite a push to extinguish the blazes on farm expanses and peatlands that has included the deployment of military personnel.
He said new fires were cropping up, while those that were previously extinguished had re-emerged in peatlands or had been deliberately reignited.
He added that pollution readings in several Indonesian cities were at hazardous levels, and that nearly 168,000 people in affected areas has sought medical treatment for respiratory problems.
Indonesia had earlier declared a state of emergency in Sumatra's hard-hit Riau province.

Health minister: El Nino may increase dengue, malaria risk

Health minister: El Nino may increase dengue, malaria risk

May 23, 2014

KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 — The El Nino phenomenon, expected to hit the country from June to December this year, may increase the risk of vector borne diseases such as dengue and malaria, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S.Subramaniam.
He said the climate and temperature changes caused by the phenomenon would influence the vector population and behaviour including the virus replication.
“Various studies have shown that the incubation period of the virus reduces in warm temperature as demonstrated in the laboratory experiment which reduced from 12 days at 30 Celsius to 7 days at 32 to 35 Celsius,” he said when addressing the 67th World Health Assembly 2014 in Geneva, Switzerland.
His speech text was faxed to Bernama today.
The phenomenon is characterised by a band of unusually warm ocean water temperatures that periodically develops off the Pacific coast of South America that could cause extreme weather changes across the Pacific region such as fluctuating droughts, floods and scrappy crop yields in some regions.
Subramaniam said the existence of mosquitoes in new areas had also increased due to global warming and would increase the epidemic potential by 31 to 47 per cent for dengue and 12 to 27 per cent for malaria transmission.
He said although studies linking climate factors with dengue were limited in Malaysia, it was generally accepted that changes in precipitation, ambient temperature and humidity may influence the abundance and distribution of the mosquito vectors.
“Several studies have shown a positive relationship between rainfall and dengue, the timing of rainfall was as important as the amount of rain.
“Warmer temperatures can increase transmission potential by allowing the mosquitoes’ vector to survive and reach maturity much faster and shorten the virus incubation period,” he said.
He said the government had taken firm steps in mitigation and adaptive measures through multi-agency intervention, which also included strengthening existing programme within the ministry.
It included addressing climate sensitive diseases and health conditions such as vector borne, food and water borne disease, sanitary waste disposal, the provision of clean water with high priority to research and development, he said.
“Malaysia has also prepared a plan of action for drought to face the uncertainties that may arrive due to the El Nino phenomenon,” he said. — Bernama

Malaysian Policemen Accused of Raping Indonesian

Malaysian Policemen Accused of Raping Indonesian
November 11, 2012

Kuala Lumpur. Three policemen have been accused of gang-raping an Indonesian woman at a police station in a northern Malaysian town.

Lau Chiek Tuan, a local politician, told AFP that the 25-year-old woman came to his office in the town of Prai just hours after the alleged rape on Friday.

Lau said he held a press conference on Saturday where the woman claimed the three officers in a patrol car stopped a taxi she boarded from a shopping mall in the town of Prai early Friday morning.

“They asked to look at her passport but when she produced a photocopy, they still took her to the police station. It was just an excuse to bring her in.

“She could identify the three cops who raped her in a room where there was a mattress — I don’t know for what reason there is a mattress in a police station,” he added.

However, the former elected representative said the woman did not want to be identified and she could not be immediately contacted.

News reports cited Penang police chief Abdul Rahim Hanafi as confirming that three policemen were remanded for a week on Friday night and suspended from duty pending investigations.

“We will make sure that the policemen will not be protected if the allegation turns out to be true,” he was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times newspaper on Sunday.

AFP could not reach Abdul Rahim for comment.

The woman, a restaurant worker, was also quoted by the English daily as saying she was scared and “had no other choice but to have sex with the three policemen.”

According to newspaper the Star, she said she was warned “not to tell anyone about the incident” after they sent her back to her home.

Malaysian police are already under fire from rising crime fears as personal tales of abduction, assault and robbery go viral online, triggering scrutiny of official claims that offenses have reduced significantly over in recent years.

GOOD NEWS FOR BAK KUT TEH, CHAR KUEH TIAU, HOKKIEN MEE LOVERS

FATS AND CHOLESTEROL MYTHS

Drug cartels are the biggest crooks in the world !! Hokkian mee one plate with extra 'chee yau char' please !

This must be the best news for you!

TO ALL OF YOU OUT THERE WHO HAVE BEEN HOLDING BACK !

EXTREME GOOD NEWS FOR BAK KUT TEH, CHAR KUEH TIAU, HOKKIEN MEE LOVERS

More reasons to eat Chee Yau Char (pig's lard) now because
it contains natural fats and not trans fats as in processed food made by Man.

*This is a very useful 'must read' article. It makes sense to me. Even if you have received this before it is worth reading it again.*

*Low Cholesterol Levels Increases Cancer Risk*
 - American College of Cardiology

For years, I've been telling my patients that the medical establishment's obsession with lowering cholesterol per se to prevent heart disease is causing more harm than good.

If your doctor continues to get you worried about your high cholesterol levels, here's *a bit of good news* for you...

In fact, your high cholesterol may be protecting you from cancer.

Today, I'll explain the truth behind the myth of cholesterol, and show you how to achieve heart health naturally !

A new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology revealed that driving down cholesterol levels actually increases the risk of cancer.

Researchers at the Tufts University School of Medicine found that among people taking "*statin drugs - like Lipitor and Zocor* - there was a higher *rate of cancer*.
Although the link between the drugs and cancer wasn't clear, there was no doubt that *drastically low cholesterol levels* correlated to cancer risk".
The big drug makers continue to sell the notion that the best way to fight heart disease is to lower LDL levels, the so-called "bad" cholesterol.

Yet 75 percent of people who suffer heart attacks have *normal cholesterol levels* !

It makes sense that low cholesterol levels are linked to cancer because cholesterol is one of your body's basic building blocks.
You need it to produce testosterone, to build and repair cell membranes, and to preserve your nerve cells through the formation of the protective "sheaths" that cover them.

Starving your body of this critical substance will lead to other health problems. We already know that
extremely low cholesterol levels result in muscle weakness, fatigue, depression, decreased sex drive, and "brain fog." This new research shows that there may be even more *deadly consequences*.
What really matters is not low "*bad cholesterol, but high levels of HDL*, the so-called "good" cholesterol*".
As long as you have a high HDL count - 75 to 80, for example - it doesn't matter whether your total cholesterol is 150 or 350. A high HDL will always keep your risk of heart disease extremely *low*.

So why haven't you heard this already? It may be because there's *no drug that effectively raises good cholesterol levels*. You can only effectively do it naturally.

Consume natural fats.
Avoid processed or fast foods containing * "trans" fats * - these man-made substances *were never meant for consumption*, and your body doesn't know what to do with them !!!. They wind up clogging your arteries and putting you on the fast track to heart disease. *

Instead, get your fat from free-range or grass-fed animals, eggs, nuts, and *unprocessed vegetable oils*. These are some of the healthiest foods you can eat. (As with all foods, look for organic or minimally processed options whenever possible.)

The health benefit of these natural fats comes from their balance of *Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids*. Your body needs both but, as with cholesterol, they have to be in balance.
*Omega-3s are great for your heart. They've been shown to prevent irregular heartbeat, reduce clogging of the arteries, lower blood pressure, and decrease inflammation in body tissues*.

If you stick to eating *natural fats*, you'll automatically get the right ratio of Omega-6 and Omega-3, which is about 2:1. As an added bonus, you'll automatically raise your "good" cholesterol levels and you'll reduce your risk of cancer.

Bought By Belian! Baram’s Betrayal By BN MP

Bought By Belian! Baram’s Betrayal By BN MP – MAJOR EXCLUSIVE
Posted Saturday, February 25th, 2012
This post is also available in: Iban, Malay

Local man who has swapped loyalty for wealth
The people of Baram have been sold down their own river by their native MP, the Federal Deputy Trade & Industry Minister Jacob Sagan!
Sarawak Report has received exclusive information, indicating that the local man’s support for Taib’s plans to flood his own area has been bought by two large timber concessions, allowing him to log Belian wood!
The shocking betrayal explains why Sagan, who is himself a Kenyah, born in Long Anap on the banks of the Baram River, is refusing to prevent Taib’s plans to build yet another dam in the region.
The proposed Baram Dam would flood about 400 square kilometres of forest lands and displace around 20,000 indigenous people from Sagan’s own community, including his home village of Long Anap. Altogether, 26 Kenyah, Kayan and Penan villages will be drowned under water.
Secret Belian concessions for Taib cronies!
Precious hardwood forest. Belian Timber licences are only handed out to 'special people'!
Local people have been at a loss to understand Sagan’s support for the project, which would destroy one of Borneo’s most precious remaining rainforest regions and the livelihoods of its people.
There is no further need for electricity in Sarawak, so the dam has been condemned as unnecessary.
However, secret Forestry Department Maps have now been made available to Sarawak Report, which give one very persuasive reason.
The maps show that Sagan has been handed two hugely valuable Belian timber concessions right within his own region!
Forestry map key that shows that striped red stands for Belian Timber Concession
Standard timber concessions rarely include Belian, which is an endangered species and extremely valuable.
Under normal licences the loggers are supposed to leave such special conservation species standing and it is subject to a total export ban.
However, rumours have persisted that special concessions for Belian timber have been given out to Taib’s political cronies to buy their support.
Our maps show that there is indeed a network of these Belian concessions in the Baram area, which still has stretches of virgin forest and it names the companies and the licence numbers.
Winjac Sdn Bhd and Milisha Holdings Sdn Bhd
Two of these concessions are placed right in the middle of Jacob Sagan’s own Baram constituency area and cover an impressive area amounting to some 15 square kilometres. The companies owning the concessions are named Winjac Sdn Bhd and Milisha Holdings Sdn Bh.
Winjac Sdn Bhd & Miilisha Holdings Sdn Bhd - Belian concessions in Baram
Wider maps show that these two concessions are situated right in the middle of the Baram region, near the Indonesian border and not far from Jacob Sagan’s birthplace of Long Anap.
While, Sagan has travelled far and enjoyed a good life, thanks to becoming an ultra-loyal supporter of Taib, most of his relatives still live in this area.
Regional map showing the timber concessions belonging to Winjac & Milisha Sdn Bhd
The value of these concessions run into millions of ringgit, according to experts in the business. Belian is an endangered species and takes hundreds of years to grow into the mature ‘iron wood’ , for which it is famous.
Belian leaf - surely the wealth of the forests should be conserved and shared?
The wood can sell at up to RM6,000 a ton, which is a sign of its growing scarcity, caused by the greed of the timber companies who have invaded Sarawak’s forests.
So, who is getting these favoured concessions worth such wealth and what are they paying for them?
Indeed, under normal uncorrupted practices Belian would be banned from being logged altogether, just as it is supposedly banned from being exported.
Also, under normal uncorrupted practices, any licence that was given out would be tendered, so that the licence would go to the highest bidder and the money for the licence could then be used by the government to improve the lives of local people.
Timber licence money would be one way to pay for schools, roads, electricity, water pumps and better health care and allowances. However, the people of Baram remain poor and with few such services.
So, who has these concessions and what did they pay?
Milisha Holdings Sdn Bhd is jointly owned by Jacob Sagan himself and his wife, Winnie Jolly!
It turns out the shareholders of the company Milisha Holdings Sdn Bhd are none other than local MP and Government Minister, Jacob Sagan and his wife Winnie Jolly!
Did Jacob Sagan tell his voters?
This demands an explanation from Taib Mahmud and Jacob Sagan, preferably to the forces of law and order. Because, to secretly hand an MP of your own political party a large and valuable timber concession is a scandalous conflict of interest.
People in public office should not get involved in any form of business involving state concessions, for obvious reasons, and any business interests should be openly declared.
But, there is no evidence that Sagan has publicly declared this timber licence BT/9107, granted to his company Milisha Holdings. Nor is there any evidence that he has declared licence BT/1962, which he also holds through his wife and daughter’s ownership of Winjac Sdn Bhd.
Sagan's wife and daughter own this other timber company with Belian concessions in the Baram region
Perhaps we will learn how many of Jacob Sagan’s constituents were aware that Jacob Sagan has been handed two Belian concessions worth millions of ringgit, thanks to Taib’s Planning and Resources Ministry.
With what did Sagan pay for this concession?
Sagan at a party for SPDP, his party which is known for its loyalty for Taib and BN
Next, it is important to discover how much did Jacob Sagan pay for this secretive concession that has been granted to him in the land belonging to his own voters by the BN government of Taib Mahmud?
Such a valuable concession, worth millions of ringgit, should have cost a very great deal in premium payments to the statute.
However, on his salary as an MP of RM12,000 a month how could he afford this?
His previous career as a Sarawak civil servant could not legitimately have made him a rich man either!
At the moment, because Taib keeps all his timber negotiations a scandalous secret, we have no information about how much Sagan paid, if anything.
As a result, we are left with the inevitable conclusion that Sagan has paid for these concessions with the one thing that he has that is of value to Taib Mahmud, which is his political support.
Will any of Sarawak's trees be allowed to stay standing, as BN's MPs set about plundering what is left of the state?
So, if Taib has decided that he can make himself wealthier by flooding the people of Baram and using the electricity to power factories owned by himself, then BN MPs like Jacob Sagan have no choice but to support him.
It is plain that Jacob Sagan’s loyalty has been bought by Belian.
Because he has been bought by Belian, Jacob Sagan can no longer fight for what is right for his people.
So, even if Taib decides to flood their lands, destroy their livings and move all his relatives to resettlement towns with minimal compensation, Jacob Sagan has to keep supporting Taib.
If not, Jacob and his wife and family would lose their Belian concessions and have to live on their actual income of RM12,000 a month.
That might sound a very good salary for most people, but BN MPs have got used to living like kings, because they have sold their duty towards their people in return for licences to plunder them.

Rights in Malaysia – No action, talk only
K Pragalath
January 23, 2012

HRW's latest report claims that the government's efforts in promoting human rights leave a lot to be desired.

PETALING JAYA: The state of human rights in Malaysia is filled with promises of reforms and politicians backtracking their words, according to Human Rights Watch’s 22nd annual report entitled World Report 2012 that was released yesterday.

The report looked into eight key issues in Malaysia but the one main issue was Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s Sodomy II trial.

HRW noted that Anwar’s legal team was denied access to the prosecution’s witness list, critical forensic samples for independent examination, and medical examiners’ notes from hospital examinations of the accuser – all in violation of international fair trial standards.

Anwar has since been acquitted on Jan 9 due to questionable DNA evidence and the Attorney General’s Chambers has filed an appeal last week.

Violations against freedom of expression, association and assembly are also well documented in the report, through the Bersih rally on July 9 last year and the detention of six political activists under the Emergency Ordinance.

“Malaysia’s leaders are fooling themselves by thinking they can backtrack on public promises to respect the rights to demonstrate peacefully and criticize the government without fear.

“The more Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and government politicians play their game of big talk, with little action on rights, the more they should expect popular pushback,” said Phil Robertson, deputy director for Asia region at Human Rights Watch on these violations.

Media censorship

Under the sub-heading of media censorship, HRW stated that Home Ministry has continued to deny online news portal Malaysiakini rights to publish newspapers on the grounds that publishing permit was “a privilege,” not a right.

It also criticised the proposed reforms on the Printing Presses and Publications Act. Under the reform measures, annual licensing for print has been revoked but the Home Minister retains broad authority, without judicial review, to refuse permission to publish anything he determines “likely to be prejudicial to public order, morality, security … or national interest.”

The report also highlighted Najib’s announcement to repeal the controversial Internal Security Act 1960 and the revocation of the three emergency proclamations and the review of the Restricted Residence Act.

“However, he committed to introducing two new laws under article 149 (Special Laws against Subversion) of the Federal Constitution, which allows parliament to enact sweeping security provisions that deny basic freedoms.

The Malaysia – Australia refugee swap deal signed on July 25, but eventually cancelled, was also criticised in the report because Malaysia has not ratified the 1951 Refugee Convention which means that Malaysia had failed to differentiate refugees, asylum seekers, trafficking victims, and undocumented migrants.

The swap deal would have permitted Australia to send 800 asylum seekers to Malaysia for refugee screening in exchange for 4,000 refugees. However an Australian High Court judgment deemed the swap deal as illegal.

The Malaysian Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act was also rubbished as it failed to provide protection to the victims

Sexual orientation

Under the topic of sexual orientation and gender identity, the government’s refusal to repeal Article 377B of the Penal Code, which criminalizes consensual “carnal intercourse against the order of nature”, was criticised.

HRW highlighted the banning of Seksualiti Merdeka which was a seven day festival for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community to express their issues.

It also highlighted the case of Aleesha Farhnan Abdul Aziz who failed to compel the National Registration Department to recognise him as a female.

The HRW was also concerned about the freedom of religion among the minorities following a raid by the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department on Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC)

“Panas” Jika Dengar Azan : Susuk Kuat Solat

Tubuh panas dengar azan

UMNO/BN Tiada Integriti - Aziz Bari

UMNO/BN Tiada Integriti - Aziz Bari
Posted: Fri, 10 Jun 2011 04:30:00 +0000

What's in for green building

What's in for green building
Focus

THE current year looks promising for the green building industry, according to the Earth Advantage Institute (EAI), a non-profit organisation which works with the building industry in Portland, the United States, to help implement sustainable building practices.

It has identified trends in green building for 2011 that range from how to make green homes affordable and energy efficient to community purchasing power and accessory dwelling units following discussions with stakeholders, policymakers, builders, developers, architects, real estate brokers, appraisers, lenders and homeowners.

Here are some of the trends:

Affordable green

EAI said green and energ-yefficient homes are often associated with higher costs but that is changing as new business models, technologies and high performance materials are making them within reach of owners.

With low-cost energy audits, homeowners are becoming more aware of the benefits of simple and inexpensive retrofits, so energy efficiency upgrades are increasingly commonplace.

Affordable housing groups such as Habitat for Humanity build LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Homes-and Energy Star-certified dwellings across the US for as little as US$100,000 (RM306,250). Therefore, green can be affordable.

Community purchasing power

This encourages communities interested in renewable energy to purchase materials such as solar panels in bulk to reduce the price and installation cost.

EAI said group purchasing creates 15 to 25 per cent savings below current prices and gives consumers significant cost savings. It also increases solar energy use among communities.

Accessory dwelling units (ADUs)

These are extra living units on your property complete with a kitchen, bathroom and sleeping facilities. EAI said that being the ideal size for energy efficiency and green construction, these small detached or attached units can be used as offices, studios, rooms for in-laws or be rented out.

ADUs help cities increase urban density and restrict sprawl as rental units while homeowners can add value to their property. Cities such as Portland, Oregon and Santa Cruz have waived administrative fees to encourage more ADU construction.

Residential grey water

EAI said the trend of grey water recycling - any household water waste except toilet water - is gaining traction as it reduces water usage. The practice is still new but many communities have increased the amount of allowable grey water use for irrigation.

Encouraging grey water recycling also reduces strain on septic and rainwater systems and underground replenishment.

Lifecycle analysis (LCA)

EAI said understanding the lifecycle of building materials - their effects from cradle to grave - has always been important to green builders. The industry is studying these materials' effects over the course of their entire lives, from raw material extraction through to disposal and decomposition.

Therefore, lifecycle analysts are examining the impacts of materials through the lens of environmental indicators, which include embodied energy, solid waste, air and water pollution, and potential for global warming.

With the results, LCA for building materials will help architects determine what products are environmentally friendly and more sustainable for usage.

CLAIMING he has never had a telephone bill exceeding RM550, JAWAHAR of Kuala Lumpur is shocked to find his latest handphone charge to be RM1,200.25.

"I received the bill from Maxis on Dec 28 and immediately called their customer service centre to complain. The staff promised to call me after four working days to provide an explanation," he says, adding the call never came.

JAWAHAR says when he called the second time, another staff he spoke to apologised and proposed to reduce his bill to RM250.

JAWAHAR says he did not agree to this and the staff then promised to call him back.

"I disagreed because I never made all those calls that were listed in my itemised bill.

"I have been a Maxis customer for 16 years. My record with them is so good that they gave me a credit limit of more than RM3,000 before.

"Previously, I never bothered to check my bill. This is the first time I'm doing it and this is what happens."
JAWAHAR is still waiting for Maxis to explain to him on the overcharging.

● A SPOKESMAN for Maxis Communications Bhd thanks JAWAHARr for bringing up the matter to them and apologises for the inconvenience caused.

"We have contacted JAWAHARr and resolved the issue amicably, and he has accepted our apology.

"Instead of the full RrM250, we've agreed to have JAWAHARr pay only RrM86. We take full responsibility for this.

"The complainant is a long-time client and we appreciate his loyalty towards Maxis. We hope to keep on serving him better."

The spokesman advises customers to contact them directly through customercare@maxis.com.my or call at 1 800 821 123 to enable them to assist and respond to feedback.

When contacted, JAWAHAR says he is pleased with Maxis for solving the matter in a professional manner and hopes they keep up the good service.

Helping himself – Taib Lifts Prime Plots from Pelita

Helping himself – Taib Lifts Prime Plots from Pelita
Tuesday, December 7th, 2010 GMT

The Sarawak Chief Minister, Abdul Taib Mahmud, who is also the Chairman of the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA), which manages state land under the title of Pelita, has been using his control over the government agency to steer prime bits of land the way of himself and his family!
Sarawak Report has found documentary proof that a huge area of 700 acres of valuable state land at 13th Mile Kuching, which had formed part of the Rajah Brooke Memorial Hospital site next to the Semengok National Park, has now been absorbed into the Taib family property empire.
The Chief Minister himself holds substantial shares in the property. In his guise as Chief Minister and Chairman of the LCDA, he himself would have approved and overseen the deal from which he has so directly profited.

We have established that the land was originally ‘alienated’ from the Hospital and placed under the ‘custody’ of the State in in 1984. Three years later in 1987 the LCDA then saw fit to transfer the custody of this land, which forms an extension of Semengok National Park, to a company called Lanco Plantations. Semengok is the last remaining sanctuary for Orang Utan in the entire region and as its name indicates, Lanco Plantations tears down natural habitats and plants palms. The biggest single shareholder in Lanco Plantations is the company Mesti Bersatu sdn bhd, which is owned by Taib Mahmud himself and members of his brother Arip’s family.
The the details of this shameful transaction are stamped ‘CONFIDENTIAL’ in the Land Registry, doubtless in an attempt to conceal the dishonesty of the deal. Sarawak Report would like to inform readers that a great number of the transactions registered in the Land Registry are likewise marked “Confidential” and we will leave you to draw your own conclusions.

A deal marked “CONFIDENTIAL”!

Taken for free
It is local knowledge that the land, which in the past had been given to local people to plant padi and to lepers being treated at the hospital to farm, had been taken from the Hospital and then passed into the hands of Taib’s brother Arip Mahmud. Villagers in the area bitterly refer to it as ‘Arip’s Land’. However they reacted angrily today when they learnt about the full details of the transaction.
We were able to inform them that the records show that the entire area of 256 hectares (around 700 acres) was transferred to the ownership of Lanco Plantations and their Taib family shareholders for a ”NIL” premium. They were handed it absolutely free. It is surely for the corruption commissioners at the MACC to enquire on what grounds Taib, as both the Chairman of the LCDA and Chief Minister, gifted such a property to his family?

But nothing for Sarawak
Meanwhile, many of the locals, mainly Bidayu, have suffered considerable hardships, because of the loss of their lands to developments such as the Borneo Highlands Resort and road-building for little if any compensation. It has now become clear that, since the Mahmuds were getting hold of their lands for free there, will have been no money available for such compensation!
Given that there is no evidence that the LCDA paid the hospital for the land either (which would have at least provided funds to help the sick), it is obvious that the people of Sarawak have got absolutely nothing in return from the from this grabbing by the Chief Minister of land that was originally bestowed on the public by the Rajah Brooke family for the well-being of sick patients.
Taib’s profit
The profits that have accrued to the Taibs as a result of this secret transfer of land are only too evident. Research has shown that land in this area is now valued at up to RM 50,000 per acre, meaning that the 700 acres now in their possession are currently worth at least RM 35 million. The area is presumably now earmarked for palm plantations, despite the destruction that would cause to the National Park. However, given its proximity to Kuching the general view is that Taib will opt to make bigger profits by building and selling housing.

Wisma Pelita in Kuching - The Chairman (Taib) occupies a fancy office in the top but looks out on few remaining trees

Saleh bin Ahmad, one local resident of the Kampong Mambong area today observed that since the Mulu National Park has now been almost completely denuded and logged by the Taib family, despite its World Heritage Status, the same will probably now happen in their area driving away the last of the Orang Utan.
Do BN acknowledge this is corruption?
Earlier this week YB Karim Hamza, a close political ally and friend of the Chief Minister, went on record to say that there is no reason for a politician to refuse cheap land if someone offers it to them. Referring to his boss, he said that if such land then happened to rise in value by thousands of times over the years then why should the politician not profit from doing business of this kind while in office ?
Therefore, Sarawak Report would like to ask YB Karim Hamza and all Taib’s other BN supporters, whether Taib’s offering of state land to himself by himself for free falls into this category of “business opportunity” to which he was referring? We would like to know if this what he means by politicians accepting cheap land ?
On the other hand Hamza did acknowledge that if a politician were to abuse his political power to enrich himself that would be corruption. So was Taib’s use of his position as Chairman of the LCDA to grant himself a huge area of land for free therefore corrupt in Mr Hamza’s eyes, or does he think he can come up with some further excuses for his boss?
We would also like the BN advocates of the concept of mixing politics with business to consider whether other decisions by the Chief Minister might also have enhanced his profit from the land? For example, his decision to remove the land from the hospital in the first place and then to make it available for development ? Was it not this decision, rather than the years which have passed, that has so exponentially increased the value of the land that he has given to himself and his family!
Pelita Goldmine

Wisma Pelita in Kuching - The Chairman (Taib) occupies a fancy office in the top but looks out on few remaining trees
The avowed intention of Pelita, according to the philosophy laid down by its founder the Chief Minister in 1981, is to develop Sarawak’s land for the ‘benefit of the State Sarawak’. That development has certainly gone ahead. There is scarcely an inch remaining of the country’s once breathtaking jungles.
But onlookers have observed that given the huge swathes of land that have been handed out, generating hundreds of billions of ringgit in timber and oil palm, the premiums that Pelilta has managed to obtain on behalf of the people of Sarawak have been astonishingly minute. Just a few hundred million in all that time. We can now see why, since the Chief Minister has clearly been handing out great chunks of land either for free or for a fraction of its worth to his family and himself.
Is it not time for a reforming White Paper to make all those transactions marked “CONFIDENTIAL” in the Land Registry public? Instead YB Karim Hamza and his BN cronies have been demanding a very different sort of White Paper to allow them to try to shut up the critics such as Sarawak Report.

PM/Umno FISHING FOR CHINESE VOTES

PM/Umno FISHING FOR CHINESE VOTES
If you want this country as your home, spread this quickly to all your relatives/friends !
We have lost almost EVERYTHING since 1957.
Vote for change.

If you are still not registered as a voter, please do so now !

by Richard Loh

I cried when reading Najib's speech delivered by his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at the 2nd World Chinese Economic Forum. I cried not because of happiness nor recognition but the insincere and hypocritical treatment of the Malaysian Chinese by the PM.

They can keep on bashing the Malaysian Chinese of being ungrateful, pendatang, prostitutes, si-sepet and claiming that they do not need the Malaysian Chinese votes to stay in power. No one can questions their imaginary ketuanan and special rights. The PM and also their president was very brave with his threat while giving his UMNO speech.

Now in sick bed and facing the real threat of losing the 13th GE without the Malaysian Chinese supports, the PM takes the opportunity of the 2nd World Chinese Economic Forum to beg for the Malaysian Chinese votes. He has no choice but to recognise that Malaysia will not be what it is today without the Malaysian Chinese support.

Now we want to see what Umno, Perkasa and Mahathir have to say about this speech by Najib.

“Malaysia would not be what it is today without the industry, expertise and dedication of the Malaysian Chinese community,”

“Likewise, there will be a bleak future for Malaysia without the Chinese community’s support. We would clearly fall short of reaching the goals to become a developed nation by 2020.”

He added that the community formed the backbone of the Malaysian economy through its small and medium enterprises.

This speech can prove only one thing, that Malaysian Chinese can survive without any government's handout and do not have the time to quarrel or argue about the ketuanan melayu and their special rights, 54 years have shown that.

Speeches are just speeches and they are meaningless without action. We have heard many nice and juicy speeches by the PM regarding Malaysian Chinese and to date what actions have been taken. The racist school principals and the PM's senior aide are not punished for the crimes they committed.

By allowing UMNO, Perkasa, Mahathir and Utusan to spin and twist everything in sight into racial and religious issues prove that the PM is in Somniloquy Mode.

As a Malaysian Chinese, I am calling all others not to be sucked in by the PM's nice speeches. He is good to you now because he wants your votes. Once he gets your votes, you will become pendatang again, you are ungrateful and if you do not like it you can go back to China. We are not beaten twice shy but many times over.

The only way to ensure that we remain recognised as a true Malaysian with equal rights and opportunities is to let UMNO - BN sit as opposition for at least two terms come the 13th GE. Only then will Umno-BN learn to behave and appreciate each and every Malaysian. - http://ousel.blogspot.com/2010/11/pm-umno-bn-come-begging-for-chinese.html

— www.nurulizzah.com
