'WRONG': It should not be praising Malaysia's 'mediocre' search efforts, he says

PETALING JAYA: DATUK Seri Anwar Ibrahim has hit out at  Singapore for supporting "mediocre" Malaysian efforts in the search for MH370, while absolving himself of  a controversial statement that he could handle the tragedy in a second.
Commenting on the recognition of other countries on Malaysia's attempts to find the missing aircraft, the opposition leader singled out Singapore as being "inconsistent" between championing meritocracy and mediocrity.
"Singapore has repeatedly praised Malaysia. I thank them in the case of MH370. But Singapore sometimes contradicts itself. It talks about meritocracy, but (would settle for) mediocre leaders in the neighbouring country (Malaysia)," he said at a press conference at PKR headquarters here yesterday.
Anwar said the opposition was not against the search-and-rescue operation as a whole.
"We are not saying that everything is wrong in Malaysia. We are saying there is no transparency.
"(For example), there are (matters on) radar and mangosteens (pertaining to allegations that the MH370 flight manifest not made public or clear). These are the central issues."
The PKR de-facto leader said the Singapore government should not infer that the Malaysian opposition was irresponsible in its criticism.
"And (Singapore) repeatedly say that it is satisfied. I mean are you satisfied with mediocrity when you talk about meritocracy in your country?"
On the recent controversial statement in which Anwar was quoted as saying that he would only take one second to address the mystery of MH370, he said he was misquoted by the report.
"I refer to the original statement in which I said I would take one second... which I meant that I will take a spontaneous action on my part to take immediate action to protect national security and disseminate information in a transparent manner."
On April 5, a Chinese daily published an interview by the Southern Weekly magazine with Anwar, quoting him as saying that he would only take one second to decide to ensure national safety and provide information to the people if he was the prime minister.

Disgorge in Kuala Lumpur 8.18.2013

Jello Biafra once remarked that death metal "is the first form of rock music that has caught on with poor people over the world"; he also noted that the bands "sound more than a little bit alike." I'm not sure that fans in Malaysia would appreciate being lumped in with Jello's "poor people", but the sentiment is spot on, and seems to be especially true about "slam". What started off as a New York-centric style is now a worldwide phenomenon, with Suffocation's disciples popping up everywhere from Las Vegas to Laos. That all the bands seem virtually identical hasn't slowed its spread one iota; message board C.H.U.D.s can't seem to get enough gurgling vocals and palm muted chugging. I only recently warmed to the style but as someone always whinging about the death metal scene in KL (or rather, the lack thereof), I'm not in a position to be picky.

I regret missing PunahRanah, who are one of the better death/grind bands in the scene (actual songs!) and who I haven't seen since the end of last year. By the time I arrived, Sick Society were onstage and had a pit going - five people running into each other like bumper cars still counts, right? Despite ostensibly playing "brutal death metal", their songs occasionally betray that "Roots Bloody Roots" and "Territory" are probably closer to their hearts than any Devourment album...but that was probably true of their audience as well.

When I saw Flesh Disgorged at Singapore Deathfest, the cavernous hall and marble floor conspired together to make them sound like the world's most gore-obsessed cement grinder; the only way I could tell their groove parts from their blasts was when their singer leaped in the air. This time, the sound was clear enough to show that the Singaporeans aren't just fast, but ridiculously tight. They made sure to bring their stage gore with them, making me wonder what their white t-shirt budget is (because there's no way they're washing and reusing them, right?). Their setlist was almost as long as the headliners, but no one seemed to mind. Bloody good fun.

Infectious Maggots are scene veterans, one of the few still playing shows. Seeing various Rumah Api mainstays watching reverently in the front row says a lot about IM's status in the scene, as did their vocalist's playful and relaxed banter. Their material doesn't sound dated even though the bulk of it was recorded in the 90's. At a time when most metalheads are victims of nostalgia for an era they didn't actually experience, it's always a pleasure to see an old band and not just one trying to be "old school".

Here's an honest admission: I know virtually nothing about headliners Disgorge, except that there's more than one band with that name. Between subwoofer-rupturing bellows, their vocalist paced back and forth as if he was in the middle of Hulking out. Despite his intimidating presence, his calls to "fuck shit up" sounded less like a demand and more of a polite invitation; but one the crowd was still eager to take him up on. Disgorge are as no-frills as brutal death gets; even their slam riffs go straight for the throat without the "ohhhhhhh shit" pandering that made deathcore devolve into self-parody so quickly. But their set was over way sooner than it should have been. I don't know, I thought all the kids climbing over each other to high five the band would have encouraged Disgorge to go for another 15 minutes at least. But after the obligatory single encore, they wisely slipped away before they could get mobbed by all the kids and their cell phone cameras.

STRAY BULLETS

Since most of the audience at the Disgorge show seemed to be new to the whole "death metal concert" thing, a few tips on etiquette:

• You don't have to hold hands in the circle pit. This isn't a Greek wedding.

• Attempting to crowd-surf and then headbanging while you're in the air only encourages the rest of us to drop you. Which we will do, because you're making our arms tired.

• Yes, I know it sucks that the promoters kept pushing you off the stage when you were up there headbanging with Disgorge, but people paid to see the band and not you. There's a stage for a reason. If you're up there longer than 10 seconds, you're just asking for a shove.

• Headscarf with skulls beats patch jackets in the KVLT sweepstakes any day.

Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve - Kuala Lumpur

A rich variety of flora can be found within the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve

The bustling city of Kuala Lumpur has many tall buildings and modern structures. However, many people are not aware that in the heart of the city, a patch of greenery still exists.

In fact, one of Malaysia’s most prominent landmarks, the Kuala Lumpur Tower (KL Tower), is built on top of one of the oldest forest reserves in Malaysia, the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve.

Gazetted in 1906, Bukit Nanas serves as a green lung of Kuala Lumpur and is home to an abundance of flora and fauna unique to the Malaysian tropical rainforest.

Bukit Nanas can be categorised as a heritage for two reasons. Firstly, it is the only remaining patch of tropical rainforest that still stands in the middle of the city.  Secondly, it is one of the oldest permanent forest reserves in the country (it celebrated its Centennial Anniversary in 2006).

The 10.5 hectare forest reserve was also gazetted as a Wildlife Reserve and Bird Sanctuary in 1934 and in 1950 respectively, with a section of about five hectares dedicated as a Virgin Jungle Reserve.

When paying a visit to KL Tower, visitors should include a trip to Bukit Nanas in their itinerary, as it lies just beside the entrance to the tower and requires no admission fee. It offers nature lovers a good opportunity to learn more about the ecology of the local forest. It is also perfect for shutterbugs and photography enthusiasts.

Nature guides are available to explain about the various types of flora and fauna in the jungle reserve. The daily guided tour runs at 11am, 12:30pm, 2:30pm and 4:30pm.

“This jungle helps to cleanse the air within its surrounding environment, and the visitors here are very supportive of preserving the natural ecology,” explained Anthony Paleng, one of the nature guides, whilst guiding a group of visitors to Bukit Nanas.

According to him, a rich variety of flora can be found within the forest reserve, which includes rare herbs, creepers, ferns, climbers and giant bamboo grasses. Huge tropical tree species also occupy the jungle namely meranti, keruing, chengal and pulai.

“All of the trees here have a unique way of surviving in the wild, a bio defense mechanism specific to each species,” he explained further.

Along the trail, there are traces of broken branches, indicating the presence of local monkeys. If you are lucky, you might see the two local species of monkeys that exist in the park, namely the Silvered Langur and the Long-tailed Macaque. Other varieties of fauna include squirrels, snakes and birds.

A camp site is available for nature lovers who wish to pitch a tent and enjoy the lush greenery of the jungle, free of charge.

People who love jogging can also enjoy running through the forest trail, and there is an outdoor obstacle course for those who want to do a little stretching and body lifting.

Visitors to the forest reserve need to take certain precautionary measures during their visit as there are some slopes that are quite steep along the forest trails. It is advisable for visitors to dress casually, ideally sports wear which includes running shoes, as there is a ladder section that could be tricky to navigate.

Kuala Lumpur Tower (KL Tower)

The Kuala Lumpur Tower project was completed in 1995, and is used for communication purposes. It features an antenna that reaches 421 m (1,381 ft), which currently makes it the 18^th tallest freestanding tower in the world. There are various activities that can be enjoyed by visitors here, which include a scenic view of the city through the observation deck, shopping, visiting the mini zoo, and also enjoying a pony ride. Getting There: The forest reserve is located in front of Jalan Raja Chulan and not far from the Telekom Museum. By car, drive up the hill at KL Tower and pay for the entrance fee and car park; admission to the forest reserve is free. Alternatively, take the Kelana Jaya Line LRT and stop at the Dang Wangi Station, or take the KL monorail and disembark at the Bukit Nanas station. Those who use the Ampang Line LRT need to disembark at the Masjid Jamek LRT station.

Main attractions: The forest trail or “Jejak Rimba” activity on the tropical rainforest can be soothing, as a walk through the sanctuary can be a refreshing change to the fast pace of urban lifestyle.

Other attractions: A large field for camping, a bird watching area, a jogging trail, and a mini herbal park.

KUALA LUMPUR: National hockey player Chua Boon Huat, 33, died in an accident involving his car and a lorry at 2.25am today.

The incident occured on the Damansara - Puchong Highway (LDP) near Kelana Jaya LRT station.

The Damansara Fire and Rescue Station was informed about an accident between a Proton Perdana and a water-tank lorry at 2.40am.

An officer and five firemen were dispatched to the scene at KM10.4 of the LDP.

They found Chua stuck in the wreckage and he died at the scene due to serious head injuries.

The cause of the incident has yet to be determined, but it was believed that Chua had rammed into the side of the highway cleanliness lorry.

Hailed from Bukit Cina, Malacca, Chua was one of the longest serving hockey players in the country.

He made his debut as a 17-year-old with the Malaysia hockey team in the 1998 Commonwealth Games and had earned more than 300 caps for Malaysia .

Penang freak storm: Work starts on removing “hanging beam”

GEORGE TOWN: A crane is being used to remove a concrete beam that is hanging precariously at the Umno building in Macalister Road here.
The beam fell on top of the 21-storey state Umno headquarters during Thursday’s thunderstorm which blew a section of a lightning arrestor and crashing onto the road.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said Friday that a giant crane would be used to remove the 20-foot concrete beam and work could only start tomorrow.
He said the crane only arrived at the scene at 7pm and by the time it is assembled and ready to work it would be late night.
“It takes about at least three hours to set up the whole crane,” he said when met at the scene in Macalister Road.
However, the authorities said work to remove the beam would be carried out throughout the night.

UMNO HQ LOSES LIGHTNING ROD, NOT ANTENNA.

The massive gale which started around 6.55pm tore off the lightning rod of the state Umno building in Jalan Macalister.
Earlier reports had referred to the lightning rod as an aerial, but the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission later clarified that it was a lightning rod.
The 20-metre lighting arrestor atop the Umno building in Jalan Macalister collapsed, leaving one person dead and eight others injured.
Jahir Hussain Sulaiman, 46, the driver of a pick up truck who was seriously injured in the incident later died at the Penang Hospital.
His nephew Azharudeen Mohd Mohideen, 18, told reporters at the hospital’s mortuary at 11.30pm that his uncle had died.
The lighting arrestor had collapsed on his vehicle and six other vehicles that were parked below. The rest of the victims only sustained minor injuries.
Penang police chief Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the storm caused the the 20-metre lighting arrestor atop the Umno building in Jalan Macalister to collapse at around 6.45pm and damaged seven vehicles including the pick up truck.
He said the driver of the pick up truck had been seriously injured.

Compensate lightning rod crash victims, Umno told

Penang PAS wants Umno to compensate the people injured and owners of vehicles that were damaged in the massive storm that hit George Town yesterday and caused a huge lightning rod to fall off the top of the Penang Umno headquarters on Jalan Macalister.
Earlier reports had referred to the lightning road as an aerial, but the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission later clarified that it was a lightning rod.
The incident caused the death of one person, injured five others, with the strong winds wrecking havoc in the other parts of Penang as well. Another person died in Air Itam, after being hit by a falling tree.
State PAS Youth secretary Afnan Taib Azimudden (right) said Umno leaders should not just be praying that no one was injured.
Afnan was referring to a Malaysiakini report last night quoting state Umno Youth chief Shaik Hussein Mydin as expressing sympathy to those affected by the incident.

Penang gov’t to give aid to victims of storm

The Penang government would be giving financial assistance to the victims of the storm which wreaked havoc in several parts of the island and mainland, causing two deaths and several injured last night.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said his administration was assessing the situation and would also give aid to those whose rooftops were blown away by the strong winds.
“We feel regret and express our deepest sympathies to those affected and hope they or their families can be patient while we sort things out,” Lim said at a press conference along Jalan Macalister.
“For those whose rooftops have been blown away, we urge them to lodge a police report. Our welfare department is also assessing the situation,” he added.

The Penang Umno headquarters was damaged by strong winds, breaking the antenna from the 23-storey building.
According to Bernama, seven pedestrians were injured. Two of whom suffered serious injuries. Seven vehicles were also damaged.
The Lebuh Pantai fire station said that the incident happened at 6.55pm.

The rubble had caused massive damage to Jalan Macalister, located in the heart of Georgetown.

In a press release, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng urged Penang Umno officials to swiftly provide rescue workers access to the roof to prevent more debris from falling off the roof.
“About seven cars have been damaged and we hope there are no more casualties,” he said.

“It’s an accident, a natural disaster. We hope no one is hurt, ” he said.

Storm blows antenna tower off roof top, causes gridlock on major roads in Penang (Updated)

GEORGE TOWN: A thunderstorm blew havoc in Penang uprooting trees and causing gridlock on major roads here on Thursday.
The strong winds, which started at 7pm, blew off a 40m section of a pole located on top of the 21-storey Menara Umno in Macalister Road.

Trees were also uprooted in several places, falling on parked cars.
In Tanjong Tokong, roof awnings was seen flying off from houses.
Five people including two seriously injured were sent to the hospital.
Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said a man, who was walking up the Air Itam Dam during the storm, died after suffering a heart attack when a falling tree narrowly missed him.
The Meteorological Department said the storm lasted for about one hour from 7pm.
