Malaysian shares likely to trade firmer this week

KUALA LUMPUR: SHARES on Bursa Malaysia are likely to trade firmer this week with more inflow of funds despite the market's short-term weakness and concerns about China's monetary policy and the eurozone crisis.

The FTSE Bursa Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (FBM KLCI) staying above 1,500 on good volume gave credibility on its resilience, Affin Investment Bank Head of Retail Research Dr Nazri Khan said.

Last week, the key market barometer rose by 6.3 points to 1,507.28 after rising near the historic high of 1,528.01 last Thursday on strong buying interest on key heavyweights but succumbing to profit taking a day later as investors opted to sell on strength.

Despite short term weakness on Friday and concern in China/Europe, we see positive investor risk attitudes in the local equity market, possibly driven by good corporate earnings and ample talks on consolidation exercise, Nazri said.

Other factors include impending election hype, stronger commodity price, attractive local bond yield and hot-money carry trade play.

The fact that Dow Jones at a new two-year high and Nikkei at a new seven-month high is likely also influence Asian indices, including FBM KLCI higher.

We also expect reduced equity volatility for the rest of this month to support FBM KLCI higher given the downtrend of the CBOE Volatility Index which suggests declining investor anxiety, Nazri said.

The looming January effect with year-end accumulation of selected blue chips in the last few weeks of the year is also supportive for the local market.

As the property and construction indices remain very close to three-year highs, there is expectation for more strength of the sectors to push FBM KLCI higher.

Going forward, we believe the local market is likely to show more resilience with a potential upside break-out next week. Given ample liquidity now, we are not surprised to see FBM KLCI aiming for 1,530 in the near term, Nazri said.

Any close above 1,530 would lead FBM KLCI to a good bull rally towards an all-time-high of 1,550 in the early part of next year, he added.

Don’t refer to individuals by race in the courts


THERE has been much said about the 1Malaysia concept. Indeed, it assures a more harmonious nation, and for this to materialise 1Malaysia has to be instilled in the “vital organs” of the country.

In my regular visits to the courts, I hear statements being made during trial in which individuals are referred to by their race. This is especially so when witnesses are called.

Be it in the Sessions court or the High Court, there are police officers, experts and prosecutors from the Attorney-General’s chambers who refer to individuals by their race.

For example, terms like “dua lelaki India (two Indian men)” or “budak Cina (Chinese child)” or “wanita Melayu(Malay lady)” are often uttered by the groups mentioned.
I am sure the racial identity of the individual can be omitted and reference can instead be through their physical description, job, etc.

The mere recognition of one’s racial identity is the initial spark to racial discrimination leading to a divided nation.

When such is the habit in court, it is difficult to expect laymen to embody the 1Malaysia concept.

Members of the executive and judiciary are highly respected people who are the heroes of many children, thus it would make a great difference if these groups can be colour-blind.

All men are to be regarded as equal in the courts of the realm and this equality can only be truly achieved if reference by race is not made.
A word to witnesses not to mention anyone by their race and a circular issued to policemen and lawyers advising against such references can go a long way towards moulding the attitudes of these respected members of society in regard to 1Malaysia.
This may seem a trivial issue but it is the small details that form the bigger picture.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed issued a warning today to Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties against bringing up racial issues, saying that such a move will cost the ruling coalition to lose votes at the ballot box.

The former prime minister gave a stern reminder to BN component parties like MCA, MIC and Gerakan, stressing that BN was a party for all races, and its coalition members needed to stop playing up to each other’s race gallery.

“The problem with some component parties of BN is that in their desire to be popular, they like to bring up racial issues. And that will be negative because you only promote your particular race and others will get annoyed.

“When this happens, they will not support you,” the 85-year old politician bluntly said.

“They (BN component parties) need to know this...BN represents all races, not just one race,” Dr Mahathir told reporters today.

Dr Mahathir’s response today comes shortly after BN concluded its annual convention last weekend, where MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek had shocked his BN colleagues with calling for a ban on the term “ketuanan Melayu.”

In his speech at the BN convention, Dr Chua had made direct references to Umno as he reminded the ruling party that the MCA, and all other component parties, deserved to receive equal recognition as coalition partners.

Dr Chua had told his Umno allies that there should not be a “big brother, small brother” system in the ruling pact.

The veteran politician even took a direct swipe at Umno by pointing out that the MCA was not in agreement with how important government policy decisions were made during Umno supreme council meetings instead in the Cabinet.

The MCA president’s remarks were not well received by many Umno leaders, with Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein saying this week that Dr Chua had upset a number of leaders last weekend with his remarks.

Hishammuddin had said that many had expressed their dissatisfaction that the straight-talking MCA president had used the Barisan Nasional convention over the weekend as a platform to air his grouses against Umno.

Dr Mahathir has also attacked Dr Chua for his firebrand remarks earlier this week, calling it “illogical and baseless.”

“I don’t have to make any reference to which party I am referring to, you know it better than me,” said Dr Mahathir today when asked whether his remarks today were directed towards the MCA.

The former PM also remained unconvinced that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak would call for snap elections by the first quarter of next year.

“I can’t read the PM’s mind, but in my opinion I think we should give ourselves time. We see that people are still not yet settled. I think that the PM would want to make sure that the BN will win with a good majority,” said Dr Mahathir.

Speculation is rife that Najib would call for snap polls by March next year.

He however noted that it was “good” that leaders within BN who had outlived their “usefulness” left the party, in a reference to former MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

“I think that we all have our useful lives, but there comes a time where we are no longer useful.

“Like me when I am no longer useful I step down,” said Dr Mahathir.

Samy, the longest-serving MIC president, stepped down on Monday, handing over his post to Datuk G. Palanivel.

PUTRAJAYA (Dec 7, 2010): Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz was named "Tokoh Ma'al Hijrah 1432H" at the national-level Ma'al Hijrah celebration at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre here today.

Zeti, 63, is the first woman ever named as the recipient of the "Tokoh Ma'al Hijrah" award in the celebration's history of 24 years.

She received a cash prize of RM100,000, a medal, plaque and a certificate.

Interestingly, Zeti's father, Royal Professor Ungku Abdul Aziz Ungku Abdul Hamid was also named recipient of the award 11 years ago.

Speaking to reporters after receiving the award, she said she had never imagined receiving such an honour.

"I am very grateful and this will be an encouragement and inspiration for me to continue to work hard," said the holder of a doctorate degree in Finance and International Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, in the United States.

Apart from numerous awards she received in Malaysia, Zeti had also received international recognition when she was selected as a member of the United Nations Commission of Experts to suggest the direction

Today, The Star had news that people who wish to join RELA can now
register online, in only a few minutes.

Wah! RELA so modern one mah! Boleh daftar secara "online"! Cepat dan mudah!

That news is both telling and worrying.

RELA members have "Carte Blanche", they can arrest people, carry and use firearms, detain and question people and they don't have any accountability under the law.

It appears the government is trying to rapidly increase the number of RELA members.

The government could use RELA as thugs who harass, arrest, detain, question or kill anyone who the government feels is a political threat.

The government could also use RELA members to commit violence as a pretext to declare an Emergency or as thugs who disrupt polling places during elections.

It appears the government is becoming increasingly desperate and insecure in the face of public revelations about it's lies and other misdeeds.

In a civil society, in a democracy, NOBODY is above the law.

RELA has NO legitimate reason to exist in Malaysia, if Malaysia is a democracy founded on the rule of law and respect of human rights.

NO person or organisation, RELA, the Prime Minister, Home Minister, RPK, Anwar Ibrahim, Pakac Luteb, Lim Kit Siang, etc. should EVER be above the law in a democracy.

RELA should immediately be disbanded and declared illegal, not
expanded as The Star reported today.

RELA has NO relevance in the Malaysia of today and NO relevance in the Malaysia of the future.
