Thuan Chye Responds to “Orang Cina Malaysia , apa lagi yang anda mahu?”(Utusan Malaysia article)

a damn good article with many truths in it that i just have to share here.
the article is written by Mr. Kee Thuan Chye, and i am merely sharing it.

Thuan Chye Responds to “Orang Cina Malaysia, apa lagi yang anda mahu?”(Utusan Malaysia article)

By Kee Thuan Chye

Every time the Barisan National gets less than the expected support from Chinese voters at an election, the question invariably pops up among the petty-minded: Why are the Chinese ungrateful?

So now, after the Hulu Selangor by-election, it’s not surprising to read in Utusan Malaysia a piece that asks: “Orang Cina Malaysia, apa lagi yang anda mahu?” (Trans. Chinese of Malaysia, what more do you want?) Normally, something intentionally provocative and propagandistic as this doesn’t deserve to be honored with a reply. But even though I’m fed up with such disruptive and ethnocentric polemics, this time I feel obliged to reply – partly because the article has also been published, in an English translation, in the Straits Times of Singapore. I wish to emphasize here that I am replying not as a Chinese Malaysian but, simply, as a Malaysian. Let me say at the outset that the Chinese have got nothing more than what any citizen should get. So to ask “what more” it is they want, is misguided. A correct question would be, “What do the Chinese want?”

All our lives, we Chinese have held to the belief that no one owes us a living. We have to work for it. Most of us have got where we are by the sweat of our brow, not by handouts or the policies of the government. We have come to expect nothing – not awards, not accolades, not gifts from official sources. (Let’s not lump in Datukships, that’s a different ball game.) We know that no Chinese who writes in the Chinese language will ever be bestowed the title of Sasterawan Negara, unlike in Singapore where the literatures of all the main language streams are recognized and honored with the Cultural Medallion, etc.

We have learned we can’t expect the government to grant us scholarships. Some will get those, but countless others won’t. We’ve learned to live with that and to work extra hard in order to support our children to attain higher education – because education is very important to us. We experience a lot of daily pressure to achieve that. Unfortunately, not many non-Chinese realise or understand that. In fact, many Chinese had no choice but to emigrate for the sake of their children’s further education. Or to accept scholarships from abroad, many from Singapore, which has inevitably led to a brain drain.

The writer of the Utusan article says the Chinese “account for most of the students” enrolled in “the best private colleges in Malaysia”. Even so, the Chinese still have to pay a lot of money to have their children study in these colleges. And to earn that money, the parents have to work very hard. The money does not fall from the sky.

The writer goes on to add: “The Malays can gain admission into only government-owned colleges of ordinary reputation.” That is utter nonsense. Some of these colleges are meant for the cream of the Malay crop of students and are endowed with the best facilities. They are given elite treatment.

The writer also fails to acknowledge that the Chinese are barred from being admitted to some of these colleges. As a result, the Chinese are forced to pay more money to go to private colleges. Furthermore, the Malays are also welcome to enroll in the private colleges, and many of them do. It’s, after all, a free enterprise.

Plain and simple reason

The writer claims that the Chinese live “in the lap of luxury” and lead lives that are “more than ordinary” whereas the Malays in Singapore , their minority-race counterparts there, lead “ordinary lives”. Such sweeping statements sound inane especially when they are not backed up by definitions of “lap of luxury” and “ordinary lives”. They sound hysterical, if not hilarious as well, when they are not backed up by evidence. It’s surprising that a national daily like Utusan Malaysia would publish something as idiosyncratic as that. And the Straits Times too.

The writer quotes from a survey that said eight of the 10 richest people in Malaysia are Chinese. Well, if these people are where they are, it must have also come from hard work and prudent business sense. Is that something to be faulted?

If the writer had said that some of them achieved greater wealth through being given crony privileges and lucrative contracts by the government, there might be a point, but even then, it would still take hard work and business acumen to secure success. Certainly, Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary, who is one of the 10, would take exception if it were said that he has not worked hard and lacks business savvy. Most important, it should be noted that the eight Chinese tycoons mentioned in the survey represent but a minuscule percentage of the wider Chinese Malaysian population. To extrapolate that because eight Chinese are filthy rich, the rest of the Chinese must therefore live in the lap of luxury and lead more than ordinary lives would be a mockery of the truth. The writer has obviously not met the vast numbers of very poor Chinese.

The crux of the writer’s article is that the Chinese are not grateful to the government by not voting for Barisan National at the Hulu Selangor by-election. But this demonstrates the thinking of either a simple mind or a closed one.

Why did the Chinese by and large not vote for BN? Because it’s corrupt. Plain and simple. Let’s call a spade a spade. And BN showed how corrupt it was during the campaign by throwing bribes to the electorate, including baiting a Chinese school in Rasa by promising RM3 million should it wins the by-election.

The Chinese were not alone in seeing this corruption. The figures are unofficial but one could assume that at least 40 per cent of Malays and 45 per cent of Indians who voted against BN in that by-election also had their eyes open. So, what’s wrong with not supporting a government that is corrupt? If the government is corrupt, do we continue to support it?

To answer the question then, what do the Chinese want?

They want a government…

a. that is not corrupt;

b. that can govern well and proves to have done so;

c. that tells the truth rather than lies;

d. that follows the rule of law;

e. that upholds rather than abuses the country’s sacred institutions.

Because BN does not fit that description, the Chinese have learned not to vote for it. This is not what only the Chinese want. It is something every sensible Malaysian, regardless of race, wants. Is that something that is too difficult to understand?

Some people think that the government is to be equated with the country, and therefore if someone does not support the government, they are being disloyal to the country. This is a complete fallacy. BN is not Malaysia . It is merely a political coalition that is the government of the day. Rejecting BN is not rejecting the country.

A sense of belonging

Let’s be clear about this important distinction. In America, the people sometimes vote for the Democrats and sometimes for the Republicans. Voting against the one that is in government at the time is not considered disloyalty to the country.

By the same token, voting against UMNO is also voting against a party, not against a race. And if the Chinese or whoever criticize UMNO, they are criticizing the party; they are not criticizing Malays. It just happens that UMNO’s leaders are Malay.

It is time all Malaysians realized this so that we can once and for all dispel the confusion. Let us no longer confuse country with government. We can love our country and at the same time hate the government. It is perfectly all right.

I should add here what the Chinese don’t want:

a. We don’t want to be insulted,

b. We don’t want to be called pendatang

c. We don’t want to be told to be grateful for our citizenship.

We have been loyal citizens; we duly and dutifully pay taxes; we respect the country’s constitution and its institutions. Our forefathers came to this country many generations ago and helped it to prosper. We are continuing to contribute to the country’s growth and development.

Would anyone like to be disparaged, made to feel unwelcome or unwanted? For the benefit of the writer of the Utusan article, what MCA president Chua Soi Lek means when he says the MCA needs to be more vocal is that it needs to speak up whenever the Chinese community is disparaged? For too long, the MCA has not spoken up strongly enough when UMNO politicians and associates like Ahmad Ismail, Nasir Safar, Ahmad Noh and others before them insulted the Chinese and made them feel like they don’t belong. That’s why the Chinese have largely rejected the MCA. You see, the Chinese, like all human beings, want self-respect. And a sense of belonging in this country they call home. That is all the Chinese want, and has always wanted. Nothing more.

“Congratulations to the coaching team and the Malaysian Tigers on this great achievement!" Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

SEPANG: The victorious Malaysian football team arrived at KLIA from Jakarta on Thursday to a rousing welcome from hundreds of flag-waving fans and relatives.

As fans surged to a stage set up for the returning heroes, policemen had a tough job keeping them at bay.

Jubilant supporters sang and waved the Jalur Gemilang and various banners, one of which saluted the Tigers for upholding the nation's dignity.

Earlier, after the team and officials landed, KLIA staff gave them a welcome home reception before the footballers went out to meet their fans.

On Wednesday night, the Tigers had given Malaysia a fairytale happy ending in the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Championships.

The footballers, under coach K. Rajagopal, defied the odds to emerge champions with a bunch of mostly rookie internationals.

Earlier Thursday morning, the team checked out of Hotel Sultan in Jakarta, where they had been held almost under siege the past three days, to head home after a job well done.

It was a huge sigh of relief for Rajagopal and his men, who had faced hostile fans and high tension in the streets of Jakarta, to be able to enjoy the bus ride to the Soekarno-Hatta airport.

Skipper Safiq Rahim recalled their short journey from the hotel to the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Wednesday as going to war as they were forced to ride in a police armoured vehicle (Barrucuda) to the stadium.

“It was some experience for me and the players...it was like going to war.

"But I am glad we kept our focus. It is a great achievement for a young team,” said Safiq.

Team manager Datuk Subahan Kamal was proud of his players.

“They have done their best. We expected to make the final at the 2012 championships. But these boys have shown character and tremendous fighting spirit to go out there and win the Cup,” said Subahan.

The players will take a well-deserved break before they resume playing in the domestic competition late next month.

Christmas Announcement from Malaysia-- We're not letting you leave Islam

Christmas Announcement from Malaysia,We're not letting you leave Islam

Coming out in today's Malaysian paper, The Star, in a most curiously timed announcement, is the Religious Police of Sabah's decree that the Wondrously Tolerant Religion Known as Islam will soon 'enforce' the Islamic apostasy law. (editor's note- for non Malaysian readers, Sabah is one of the states of East Malaysia).

The article that reports this piece of 'good news' (i.e. good for Islam and bad for everybody, Muslims included) is written--actually encoded--in curiously detached and dry language. This sort of doublespeak characterizes fascist ideologies, as well as governments who actively discourage critical thought and an informed citizenry.

So I shall endeavor to decode this article for you, dear readers. The article is partially shown below, with the decoded text in italics:

The Sabah Islamic Affairs Department (Jheains) will enforce the apostasy law once its faith rehabilitation centre in Kinarut is ready next year, said its director, Datuk Amri A. Suratman. (A 'Faith Rehabilitation Centre' is doublespeak for an Islamic Prison for Brainwashing and Extortion of the Innocent)

He said enforcement of the law was part of Jheains' five-year strategic plan. (How lovely! A 'plan' to continue denying freedom and ensure the continued enslavement of many and eventually all to Islam. Of course, it's all for your own good!)

Until the rehabilitation centre is ready in June, offenders will be enlightened on the merits of returning to the path of Islam, he told Bernama... ("Enlightened on the merits" means lying to and forcing innocents to remained imprisoned, isolated from their families, friends and livelihoods. Perhaps they should be grateful they aren't executed like other, more devout Muslim countries routinely do to their apostates.)

The conference, among others, touched on scores of Muslim converts, who reverted to their original religions, due to neglect from Islamic religious agencies and non-governmental organisations. (Never mind the actual wishes of these converts! They're really running away from the so-called 'perfect religion' in droves because the Guardians of Islam aren't watching them close enough. Bah! Does anyone else see the absolute disconnect here from logic and common sense? You might, but The Star is never going to print what a whole lot of you are thinking.)

Someone should send a memo to the Human Rights Commission or whatever they're called at the UN nowadays. You think that government-backed, government-funded, religious imprisonment like what the Muslims are doing in Sabah, or in any other state in Malaysia, or in any other Musllim country come to think of it, would be enough of a human rights atrocity for someone to wake up and take notice. But hey, the UN has a lot on their plate right now--after all they are probably too busy getting ready for their next 'Anti Zionist' rally in New York next year. Or maybe they're burning the midnight oil writing up yet another resolution bashing whatever the US and/or Israel is doing at the moment.

And we all know, of course, that pointing out this sort of Islamic fascism is Islamophobic and racist, not to mention contrary to harmony, bridge building, tolerance, mutual respect and all the other political correct bullshit buzz words that are so en vogue right now.

So, now that we all know what '1Malaysia' really looks like, let us celebrate this season of peace and harmony as Malaysia marches on to its mighty future.

Guan Eng denies DAP gave information to WikiLeaks

Guan Eng denies DAP gave information to WikiLeaks

KEPALA BATAS: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said claims that the party had leaked information on PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy case to Singapore as exposed in the WikiLeaks, was a baseless accusation.

Lim said the accusations levelled at DAP were just an effort to discredit the party.

He added that DAP did not have any diplomatic relationship with the Singapore government, let alone the Singapore intelligence.

“So, where did the WikiLeaks information come from? Diplomatic relations? Currently DAP has no powers to establish any kind of diplomatic relationship. So, what kind of relationship do we have with the Singapore intelligence?” he told reporters at the Pakatan Rakyat Convention here on Sunday.

On Saturday, former head of Selangor PKR Youth Hamidzun Khairuddin wanted DAP to clarify how Singapore’s Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew knew of Anwar’s alleged sodomy activities that were exposed in the WikiLeaks website recently.

Hamidzun was reported to have said that it was no secret that DAP had a close political relationship with the Singapore government, especially with Lee.

He added that details and confidential information of Anwar’s sodomy case was with DAP chairman Karpal Singh since he was representing Anwar in the sodomy case.-Bernama

Drug suspect takes long walk off short plank

December 17, 2010

SHAH ALAM, Dec 17 — A suspected drug pusher fell to his death from the fourth floor of a flat in Section 27 here yesterday while trying to escape a police raid.

According to Shah Alam police chief Supt Zahedi Ayob, the police team had to break open the door of a unit after knocking and failing to get any response from the occupants in the 4.30pm operation carried out at Block 39 in Taman Bunga Negara.

“The police team found four men in the hall and two were hiding in a room of the unit.

“On further checking, police found a packet of syabu weighing 0.5g valued at RM50 with one of the men,” Zahedi told a news conference here today.

He said on further questioning, the suspects told the police that two of their colleagues had escaped through the rear portion of the unit.

Police later found a man lying motionless and covered with blood on the back lane behind the flat.

Zahedi said the victim was one of the two men who tried to escape the police raid earlier. The other man managed to flee.

He said police found that the 29-year-old dead suspect had two previous records for theft and drug abuse.

The body was sent to Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang Three of the six men rounded up, aged 19 to 27, were tested positive for drugs and were detained, while the other three were released. — Bernama

Farewell Dr Lim Chong Eu!

Dr Lim Chong Eu was probably one of the best political strategists and a chief architect of Penang in the last century. Penang CM Lim Guan Eng paid tribute to a "giant of a politician who ushered in a new age for Penang."

The founder of Parti Gerakan first came into prominence in national politics when he won the MCA presidency by defeating its founder president the late Tan Cheng Lock. However, he was outmanoeuvred after being at the helm for only two years due to factionalism. He told me the opposite faction in MCA had taken an opportunity in his fall out with UMNO president Tunku Abdul Rahman over seats allocation issue and blamed him for souring the party's relationship with UMNO.

Lim had asked for MCA to be allowed to contest at least a third of seats in the parliament. He had wanted to deter any unscrupulous and careless attempt to amend the federal constitution. The constitution has been amended at least 700 times since the premiership of Tunku!

I had asked him about his decision to join the Barisan Nasional in 1973 which had caused a split in the party. He told me that it was a practical decision which left him without much option after the racial riots broke up in Klang Valley, Penang, Malacca and several parts of the country. Penang was suffering from a massive unemployment of almost 15%. He had mooted the idea of Barisan Nasional to Tun Razak, his closest ally in UMNO when he was serving in the National Emergency Council.

As a leader, he had to support national reconciliation (the original purpose of Barisan) and ensure that the promises to the voters of Penang were met and jobs were created. The federal government under the premiership of Tun Razak was supportive to Dr Lim's plans and proposals to help create a new frontier for the city state. As a result, the Free Trade Zones were created after the MCA minister of transport had taken away Penang's free port status. It was Dr Lim who brought Intel to Penang in the early 70's. He had created the Penang Development Corporation to help him to implement his vision.

I had also asked him about the NEP. He did support the original intent of the NEP which he was sure that it will be repealed and liberalised in 20 years (1990). Unfortunately, Dr Lim was defeated in the 1990 GE by Lim Kit Siang and subsequently retired from politics. He had remained to his non-interference stance since then and dabbled in business instead. We did not get to find out if he would have objected to the perpetuation of NEP and Malay supremacy.

His stand on Islamic state was clear. He was unhappy that Gerakan did not do anything to stop or rebut the announcement of Dr Mahathir at the party's annual conference that Malaysia is an Islamic country. Consistent with his stand on the federal constitution just before the 1959 GE, Dr Lim was probably worried about such politicking which may hijack and alter the spirit of the secular federal constitution.

Dr Lim was a political giant and a very intimidating intellectual who would pit his wisdom against anyone trying to discuss politics and philosophy with him. I was fortunate enough to be able to spend two days with him in 2007 to interview him for a book. I visited him again at his Tanjung Bungah home after the political tsunami in 2008 to ask for his well-being and discuss his views on the GE outcome.

Dr Lim was not a pioneer of non-racial political ideology unlike Syed Hussein Alatas or Tan Chee Khoon. He was a MCA president and founder of Chinese based United Democratic Party but he was quick to see a need to support multiracial politics in his later years of political life.

However, like other politicians, he was not without his weakness and criticism. But Dr Lim's imprint on the Penang socio-economic landscape has survived until today and will continue to do so in the future. Many Penangites working in factories in Bayan Lepas FTZ or using the Penang Bridge should pay tribute to his contribution. His other project, KOMTAR, was very ambitious. It was the highest building in Southeast Asia in the 80's but has became an eye sore since the era of Koh Tsu Koon's administration.

I was honoured to be able to pit my limited wisdom with his during those visits.

Sebuah Catatan Perjalanan Politik Bangsa -Dr Mahathir.

ASPAN ALIAS
Sebuah Catatan Perjalanan Politik Bangsa

Sedap membaca sejarah ciptaan Dr Mahathir.

‘BUT, it’s better late than never’ bak kata perbilangan Inggeris yang semua orang tahu.

Ketuanan Melayu: Usah sorok sebalik songkok 3 jengkal

Ketuanan Melayu: Usah sorok sebalik songkok 3 jengkal

Umno serah kerusi Ketua Menteri

Bukankah melupakan asal usul keturunan ertinya melupakan Ketuanan Melayu?” soalnya.

Salah lapor budaya media Umno

Anwar: Tak perlu persoal bukan Melayu jadi TPM

Sep 04, 2009 08:48:57 pm

Growing list of tainted MBs

Growing list of tainted MBs
Friday, 10 December 2010 Combat

By Terence Fernandez, The Sun

YESTERDAY was World Anti-Corruption Day and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) observed it with the satisfaction of having nabbed the "biggest fish" this year, with the charging of former Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo.

For many, it was a long time coming although the charge – of buying land at half the price – may not sit well with the many critics and enemies of Mohamad Khir’s who were hoping for more serious charges.

But the fact remains that the MACC had made its case and it is now up to the attorney-general and his team to present their case and for the system to decide if he is guilty.

And the former opposition leader in the state assembly should be tried on the basis of his alleged conduct. This is because the system should not be abused as a means to kill his political career in favour of other hopefuls. Because if this is the case, then it strengthens suspicions that the judicial system is being used as a political tool.

It would also underscore the perception that other politicians who are suspected of committing worse crimes are let off the hook – simply because it is politically expedient for some parties to do so. "No mandate" should never be the reason why a particular case is not pursued.

But Mohamad Khir should at least draw comfort that he is not the only ex-mentri besar who had a brush with the law. His predecessors Datuk Harun Idris spent time in Pudu for corruption, while Tan Sri Muhammad Muhamad Taib faced Australia’s legal system for currency offences. Unlike Mohamad Khir, they were convicted of these offences while in office.

Selangor also had its fair share of mentris besar with their own chequered career, which makes one think that the state seems to have a knack of making questionable leadership choices.

The verdict is still out on Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim as far as his style of administration is concerned. But at least, one can safely bet that he is clean.

Hence a look at the list of those waiting in the wings to take over from him (from both sides of the political divide) does not seem to augur well for the "most developed state". It is crucial for the right decisions to be made when the time comes to choose a new leader for the state government, lest that person one day joins the growing list of Selangor leaders who find themselves on the wrong side of the law.

THE plight of the Port Klang Authority (PKA) Board of Directors which has been whittled down to only one independent director and five government representatives evoked much response following my last column seven days ago.

The expiry of Datuk M. Rajasingam’s term especially, generated support for his reinstatement – seeing that Rajasingam was the PKA general manager during the authority’s heyday, when it was a cash-rich regulatory agency.

The main response which we published on Monday was from PKA chairman Datuk Lee Hwa Beng who agreed that Rajasingam’s service was badly needed in the board, especially when the PKA is embarking on cleaning itself up post PKFZ (Port Klang Free Zone).

Lee went the extra mile by putting on record and making public the PKA board’s recommendation to the transport minister that Rajasingam’s term be renewed.

Of course, this is the prerogative of the transport minister. Whether Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha adopts the PKA board’s recommendation remains to be seen. I for one will not be holding my breath. After all he vetoed the board’s decision to not pay bondholders due to PKA’s suit against turnkey contractor Kuala Dimensi Sdn Bhd (KDSB).

But in the case of the renewal of the term of the independent director, Kong will have a lot of explaining to do if he denies this other request of the PKA, which is also in the public interest. Maybe if he wants to better understand the situation, he could start by paying a visit to the PKA and speaking to its management and watchdogs – which apparently he has yet to do since he took over the transport portfolio in June.

Malaysian shares likely to trade firmer this week

Malaysian shares likely to trade firmer this week

KUALA LUMPUR: SHARES on Bursa Malaysia are likely to trade firmer this week with more inflow of funds despite the market's short-term weakness and concerns about China's monetary policy and the eurozone crisis.

The FTSE Bursa Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (FBM KLCI) staying above 1,500 on good volume gave credibility on its resilience, Affin Investment Bank Head of Retail Research Dr Nazri Khan said.

Last week, the key market barometer rose by 6.3 points to 1,507.28 after rising near the historic high of 1,528.01 last Thursday on strong buying interest on key heavyweights but succumbing to profit taking a day later as investors opted to sell on strength.

Despite short term weakness on Friday and concern in China/Europe, we see positive investor risk attitudes in the local equity market, possibly driven by good corporate earnings and ample talks on consolidation exercise, Nazri said.

Other factors include impending election hype, stronger commodity price, attractive local bond yield and hot-money carry trade play.

The fact that Dow Jones at a new two-year high and Nikkei at a new seven-month high is likely also influence Asian indices, including FBM KLCI higher.

We also expect reduced equity volatility for the rest of this month to support FBM KLCI higher given the downtrend of the CBOE Volatility Index which suggests declining investor anxiety, Nazri said.

The looming January effect with year-end accumulation of selected blue chips in the last few weeks of the year is also supportive for the local market.

As the property and construction indices remain very close to three-year highs, there is expectation for more strength of the sectors to push FBM KLCI higher.

Going forward, we believe the local market is likely to show more resilience with a potential upside break-out next week. Given ample liquidity now, we are not surprised to see FBM KLCI aiming for 1,530 in the near term, Nazri said.

Any close above 1,530 would lead FBM KLCI to a good bull rally towards an all-time-high of 1,550 in the early part of next year, he added.

The market's weekly volume rose to 4.968 billion shares valued at RM8.94bil from 4.89 billion shares valued at RM9bil. Bernama

Don’t refer to individuals by race in the courts

Don’t refer to individuals by race in the courts

THERE has been much said about the 1Malaysia concept. Indeed, it assures a more harmonious nation, and for this to materialise 1Malaysia has to be instilled in the “vital organs” of the country.

In my regular visits to the courts, I hear statements being made during trial in which individuals are referred to by their race. This is especially so when witnesses are called.

Be it in the Sessions court or the High Court, there are police officers, experts and prosecutors from the Attorney-General’s chambers who refer to individuals by their race.

For example, terms like “dua lelaki India (two Indian men)” or “budak Cina (Chinese child)” or “wanita Melayu(Malay lady)” are often uttered by the groups mentioned.
I am sure the racial identity of the individual can be omitted and reference can instead be through their physical description, job, etc.

The mere recognition of one’s racial identity is the initial spark to racial discrimination leading to a divided nation.

When such is the habit in court, it is difficult to expect laymen to embody the 1Malaysia concept.

Members of the executive and judiciary are highly respected people who are the heroes of many children, thus it would make a great difference if these groups can be colour-blind.

All men are to be regarded as equal in the courts of the realm and this equality can only be truly achieved if reference by race is not made.
A word to witnesses not to mention anyone by their race and a circular issued to policemen and lawyers advising against such references can go a long way towards moulding the attitudes of these respected members of society in regard to 1Malaysia.
This may seem a trivial issue but it is the small details that form the bigger picture.

Happy 52nd National Day to all Malaysians!

Tun Dr Mahathir stresses that BN represents all races. - file picture
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed issued a warning today to Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties against bringing up racial issues, saying that such a move will cost the ruling coalition to lose votes at the ballot box.

The former prime minister gave a stern reminder to BN component parties like MCA, MIC and Gerakan, stressing that BN was a party for all races, and its coalition members needed to stop playing up to each other’s race gallery.

“The problem with some component parties of BN is that in their desire to be popular, they like to bring up racial issues. And that will be negative because you only promote your particular race and others will get annoyed.

“When this happens, they will not support you,” the 85-year old politician bluntly said.

“They (BN component parties) need to know this...BN represents all races, not just one race,” Dr Mahathir told reporters today.

Dr Mahathir’s response today comes shortly after BN concluded its annual convention last weekend, where MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek had shocked his BN colleagues with calling for a ban on the term “ketuanan Melayu.”

In his speech at the BN convention, Dr Chua had made direct references to Umno as he reminded the ruling party that the MCA, and all other component parties, deserved to receive equal recognition as coalition partners.

Dr Chua had told his Umno allies that there should not be a “big brother, small brother” system in the ruling pact.

The veteran politician even took a direct swipe at Umno by pointing out that the MCA was not in agreement with how important government policy decisions were made during Umno supreme council meetings instead in the Cabinet.

The MCA president’s remarks were not well received by many Umno leaders, with Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein saying this week that Dr Chua had upset a number of leaders last weekend with his remarks.

Hishammuddin had said that many had expressed their dissatisfaction that the straight-talking MCA president had used the Barisan Nasional convention over the weekend as a platform to air his grouses against Umno.

Dr Mahathir has also attacked Dr Chua for his firebrand remarks earlier this week, calling it “illogical and baseless.”

“I don’t have to make any reference to which party I am referring to, you know it better than me,” said Dr Mahathir today when asked whether his remarks today were directed towards the MCA.

The former PM also remained unconvinced that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak would call for snap elections by the first quarter of next year.

“I can’t read the PM’s mind, but in my opinion I think we should give ourselves time. We see that people are still not yet settled. I think that the PM would want to make sure that the BN will win with a good majority,” said Dr Mahathir.

Speculation is rife that Najib would call for snap polls by March next year.

He however noted that it was “good” that leaders within BN who had outlived their “usefulness” left the party, in a reference to former MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

“I think that we all have our useful lives, but there comes a time where we are no longer useful.

“Like me when I am no longer useful I step down,” said Dr Mahathir.

Samy, the longest-serving MIC president, stepped down on Monday, handing over his post to Datuk G. Palanivel.

Today, The Star had news that people who wish to join RELA can now
register online, in only a few minutes.

Wah! RELA so modern one mah! Boleh daftar secara "online"! Cepat dan mudah!

That news is both telling and worrying.

RELA members have "Carte Blanche", they can arrest people, carry and use firearms, detain and question people and they don't have any accountability under the law.

It appears the government is trying to rapidly increase the number of RELA members.

The government could use RELA as thugs who harass, arrest, detain, question or kill anyone who the government feels is a political threat.

The government could also use RELA members to commit violence as a pretext to declare an Emergency or as thugs who disrupt polling places during elections.

It appears the government is becoming increasingly desperate and insecure in the face of public revelations about it's lies and other misdeeds.

In a civil society, in a democracy, NOBODY is above the law.

RELA has NO legitimate reason to exist in Malaysia, if Malaysia is a democracy founded on the rule of law and respect of human rights.

NO person or organisation, RELA, the Prime Minister, Home Minister, RPK, Anwar Ibrahim, Pakac Luteb, Lim Kit Siang, etc. should EVER be above the law in a democracy.

RELA should immediately be disbanded and declared illegal, not
expanded as The Star reported today.

RELA has NO relevance in the Malaysia of today and NO relevance in the Malaysia of the future.

Say "Tak Nak!" to RELA!

Thank you.

Religious forums behind closed doors allow for solutions

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 2, 2010): It is better for religious forums and workshops to be held behind closed door so that issues can be discussed and resolved in a rational manner, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said today.

Speaking after the start of a two-day strategic and development plan workshop organised by the Committee for the Promotion of Religious Understanding and Harmony, Jamil said closed-door meetings allowed participants to come to a consensus.

"We do this behind closed doors so we can solve the issues. If we open it, too many would come and we would not get a united view," said Khir, who described it as a "good start".

Some 50 representatives from the various faiths are attending the workshop.

Khir said that the role of religious societies was an important one in building "a Malaysia that is more united and one where the people help one another".

He added that the government would seek the advice of the committee from time to time to be evaluated and brought further.

Also present was Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, who said that he supported "this noble effort".

"The prime minister puts his full support and belief behind religious leaders who are keen to help the government to create understanding between worshipers of different faiths," said Koh.

CELEBRITY make-up artist Yuan Sng's quest for the perfect nose led him to undergo six operations. But the seventh time he went under the knife, he ended up with a disfigured nose.

That is what he is claiming in a legal suit against plastic surgeon Amaldass N. Dass, who is contesting the case.

Mr Sng, 39, alleged that Dr Dass was negligent in performing the rhinoplasty - plastic surgery to reconstruct the nose - that was meant to raise the bridge of his nose and make it look sharper.

Instead, he claimed he ended up with a swollen right cheek and pus in his nasal cavity.

Mr Sng, whose clients have included China-born movie star Gong Li and Italian actress Isabella Rossellini, then went for at least another five operations to fix his nose, according to his legal papers.

He claims that Dr Dass, who is married to model Junita Simon, is not on the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) Register of Specialists as a specialist in plastic surgery.

Dr Dass said yesterday: 'I am advised there is no merit in this claim and have instructed lawyers from Allen & Gledhill to respond robustly on my behalf.'

The doctor, who obtained his medical degree in 1996, became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2006. He did a year-long fellowship in cosmetic surgery at the Cambridge Private Hospital in England and also trained under a plastic surgeon from Lisbon, Portugal.

Mr Sng's suit was filed last week by lawyers from Drew & Napier, led by Mr Wendell Wong. Dr Dass's lawyers Edwin Tong and Mak Wei Munn are expected to file a statement of defence soon.

A High Court pre-trial conference is due next month.

Mr Sng consulted Dr Dass in February 2008 to improve on his previous nose jobs.

He said he was advised by Dr Dass that the nose implant from a previous plastic surgery was too large, and he was persuaded to change it.

Dr Dass assured him the surgery would make his nose sharper, slimmer and fit his face better, he claimed.

But the surgery took 61/2 hours, during which he suffered extreme pain, he alleged.

Complications later arose - his cheek swelled, his nose turned red and puffy, and there was pus in the nasal cavity.

He needed treatment over several weeks, including another operation to clear the infection in his nose.

When further complications arose in May 2008, Dr Dass told him that they were the effects of previous operations.

Mr Sng then saw another specialist to remove the infected nose implant, but was told his nose would collapse.

He then flew to Seoul to see two South Korean plastic surgeons who, in June that year, removed the infected implant.

Two months later, they attempted to rebuild his nose with a new implant. This was followed by several more operations until March this year.

Mr Sng wants damages including the $77,000 he spent in Seoul and Singapore, in addition to sums to be assessed by the court for pain, suffering and breach of contract.

High Court claims start at $250,000.

He is alleging medical negligence, claiming among other things that the clinic failed to take reasonable care to advise him on the risks and potential complications.

It is understood the allegation that Dr Dass was not properly registered was the subject of a complaint to the SMC, but it was dismissed after a probe.

Mr Sng wants redress for alleged breach of contract as the operation failed to make his nose smaller, slimmer and more suited to his face.

With his court documents were statements from two experts, including plastic surgeon Woffles Wu, suggesting the operation could have been better managed.

Dr Dass said yesterday: 'All medical procedures involve a possibility of complications, the risk of which cannot be eliminated. Patients who encounter complications are frequently and understandably upset.'

MPSP - from deficit to surplus
Slightly more than two years ago, Majlis Perbandaran Seberang Perai (MPSP) was ailing financially. Remember MPSP having to absorb responsibility for the white elephant called the Batu Kawan stadium built by the previous administration despite protests from local civil activists? Remember the over-priced spanking new MPSP building which cost them RM80 million when the same building could have been built at under RM40 million?

The MPSP was a different creature all together then. Then it was a creation of corrupt politicians (and their appointees) who wielded the reigns of power in Penang . But thankfully not anymore since 2008.

Just to give you an idea about MPSP's finances, look at the chart below.

MPSP Surplus/(Deficit)
2000 - (RM5.1 million)
2001 - (RM31.2 million)

Now tell me who are the better administrators, where public money is concerned and should be used for the public, and those who regard public money as "loot" to be shared amongst themselves and their cronies?

Imperfect as Pakatan Rakyat may be at the moment, at least they don't steal from us and the public's money is being protected and enhanced by appointed professionals! To the detractors of PR, yes I agree their problems may be unpalatable to many of us who yearn for meaningful change from race politics and self-interests but surely they are the ONLY choice when we only have a rock and a hard place to choose from, given the present electorate's indifference and ignorance.

Dear readers who have been asking me why I have been so silent on this blog about the shenanigans of the ongoing PKR polls and the call for the third force by prominent civil activists; time willing I will address this issue soon, but I foresee that it will require a long posting to truly explain my stand - it is that complicated. Hopefully, I will be able to address this issue soon once I get those nitty-gritty events which sap my free time out of the way first.

Rest assured, this blog will not shy away from difficult issues that needs addressing - personal preferences notwithstanding. Thank you for your patience.

PENANG EXCEEDED RM1 Billion in revenue in 2009 - 1st time in 52years

Convincing proof that voting for change can only bring good to the people.

Must really rid the country of the gutter rats and leeches who have sucked the country dry to the point of being bankrupt through corruption and power abuse.

Do you still want to continue to vote these parasites into power like it has been happening over the last 50 more years?
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

PENANG EXCEEDED RM1 Billion in revenue in 2009 - 1st time in 52 years

Congratulations to Penang!
Congratulations to all the People of Penang for voting in a better govt.

While Pahang which Governed by Barisan Nasional for past 52 years is facing bankruptcy.
Penang is praised by Global Anti-Corruption watchdog Transparency International for its anti corruptions efforts.

What makes Malaysia all of a sudden to be ranked on 47 out 180 countries ?
Answer : The Malaysian People made the right choice by denying 2/3 majority enjoyed by Barisan Nasional all this years. It̢۪s a well check and balance by Pakatan on Barisan that led to this 47th position.

If Malaysians wants to enjoy this, then you should know what to do in the next election !!!

Anyway congrats to Pakatan Led by DAP in Penang . In just 18 months CM Lim turned around Penang into corrupt free State . Shame on BN & ex-CM Dr Koh of Gerakan.

As ex-Gerakan President Lim KY had said: "BN/Gerakan has lost Penang forever."

"RM 10 billion in losses from corruption per year is a huge sum and there must be greater commitment from the Federal government towards fighting corruption to ensure that 27 million Malaysians can benefit from this RM 10 billion dividend from successfully combating corruption."

Global anti-corruption watchdog ranks Malaysia 47th least corrupt, praises Penang

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 24 – Global corruption watchdog, Transparency International (TI), has ranked Malaysia as the 47th least corrupt nation in the world and commended the island state of Penang for its anti-corruption efforts.

Denmark, New Zealand and Sweden was listed by TI as the top three least corrupt countries as measured by the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), which ranks countries in terms of the degree to which businessmen and country analysts perceive corruption to exist among public officials and politicians.

Singapore , Finland , Switzerland , Iceland , Netherlands , Australia and Canada rounded off the top least corrupt countries.

Malaysia came in 47th out of 180 countries in the index, tied with Hungary and Jordan .

The CPI is part of TI's Global Corruption Report (GCR) 2009 released yesterday.
In its report on Malaysia, TI highlighted the Malaysian practice of the "revolving door" whereby individuals move from government to business, or business to politics, and back again, and estimated that corruption could cost Malaysia as much as RM10 billion a year.

"Significant government participation in the private sector and considerable business participation in politics means that the movement of gatekeepers to players and players to gatekeepers has a negative influence on the concept of checks and balances," said TI.

"The complexity of the relationships between politics and the public and private sectors means that corruption may take place with impunity. Until drastic action is taken to separate the cozy relationship between government, business and politics, the anti-corruption effort will remain no more than a token gesture," said TI.

Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng says he is "humbled" by the recognition by TI and added that he was concerned over the fact that that corruption could cost Malaysia as much as RM10 billion a year – an amount equivalent to 1 or 2% of GDP as pointed out by the GCR when it cited the findings of the special government business facilitation task force Pemudah and the World Bank.

Additional report contents that were of concern to Lim was Malaysia's per capita spending of only RM5 on anti-corruption efforts and the fact that only about 10%, or just 7,223 potential corruption cases, of the total 71,558 reported between 2000 and 2006 were investigated by the Anti Corruption Agency, the precursor of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, with a conviction rate of less than one percent.

"The GCR 2009 concluded that this illustration of the Malaysian government's inaction in the light of the serious corruption allegations, along with its seeming inability to catch the big fish instead focusing on the 'small fry', suggests that what anti-corruption efforts exist are mere tokens," said Lim.

"RM 10 billion in losses from corruption per year is a huge sum and there must be greater commitment from the Federal government towards fighting corruption to ensure that 27 million Malaysians can benefit from this RM 10 billion dividend from successfully combating corruption."

Lim also today announced that the state has managed to cut about RM36 million or 12% of in operating expenditure this year due to its efforts to curb corruption.

"Transparency International' s recognition of anti-corruption efforts by the Penang state government through CAT (Competency Accountability And Transparency) governance is backed up by savings of nearly 12 per cent of the 2008 Penang state budget of RM 36 million from operating expenditure. This RM 36 million savings has allowed the state government to carry out social programs and implement its people-oriented government," said Lim.

TI said that the Penang state is the first Malaysian state government to implement the open tender system for government procurement and contracts.

It also recognized the state government's directive barring administrators and state executive councilors from making any new land applications and efforts to attract professionals to serve on various boards, such as the Penang State Appeals Board.

"On behalf of the Penang state government, we feel humbled by the recognition given by a world renowned body such as Transparency International and would redouble efforts to ensure the anti-corruption reforms are institutionalized and ensure more professionals are appointed to key bodies. Fighting corruption generates savings for the people," said Lim.

He added that the two local authorities in Penang are expected to save another RM34 million over three years from a "transparent" negotiation over the price of solid waste disposal that reduced the rates agreed to by the previous Barisan Nasional administration by a further 42.4 per cent.

Lim said that the savings would go towards the state government's "3E" programme to "enable" the people with skills and knowledge so that they have an equal opportunity to create wealth, "empower" them with fundamental rights and basic freedoms, and "enrich" the people by sharing wealth and economic benefits.

Now it is Penang Boleh - Vote wisely for a better Malaysia.
